On a sunny Saturday afternoon on a cold day in January, visitors filled the Dundas West location of Bookhou, home to an exhibition of work by ten female, Toronto-based designers. Curated by Katherine Morley and Erin McCutcheon (shown above is a detail from the latter's Lodestar, based on a Shackleton expedition), the show was designed to highlight work by designers unwilling to have their work defined as craft. The participating designers represent a variety of practices: product and industrial design, pattern and textile design, furniture making, graphic design and illustration and sculpture and installation design, among others. But, at the end of the day, gender has nothing to do with it: the work speaks for itself.
