How Starbucks Transformed Coffee From A Commodity Into A $4 Splurge

A must article by Debbie Millman on Fast Company. The full article is actually an excerpt from her upcoming book, Brand Thinking and Other Noble Pursuits, which is currently available for preorder here."Stanley Hainsworth has been a catalyst for the great brands of modern times. He was creative director at Nike and then Lego. He was vice president global creative at Starbucks in an era when the coffee purveyor was experiencing phenomenal growth. Starbucks has been hailed, acknowledged, and praised again and again for its excellence in branding and marketing, in creating a branded experience that can satisfy the connoisseur, bring in new converts, be accessible to all, and irresistible in its appeal. Stanley defined the very feel of Starbucks in an era when the brand was becoming a cultural icon."Check out the full article on Fast Company.

Student Work – Julian Yeo

Designed by Julian Yeo | Country: Australia “The brand is named Real Juice with the idea of how the brand should be. That is friendly and subtly quirky. ’Vag Rounded’ is used for the logotype to suit the characteristics of the brand. Real Juice is aimed at mid market consumers. I wanted to create a sense of familiarity and comfort by borrowing the fundamental aesthetics of real fruits. Ford Explorer Made of LEGOs

I love Ford. I love LEGOS. So, I absolutely love this Ford Explorer made entirely of LEGOs! 380,000 bricks were used to create this life-sized model. The SUV weighs 2,654 pounds a little more than half the weight of a real one. I’d like to see a real one covered in LEGOs that you can [...]

Glasshouse by VONSUNG

Our London-based editor Justine catches up with the latest action from the London Design Festival!Another fun architectural piece I adored this year was this beautiful, delicacy filled indoor glasshouse by VONSUNG for Tramshed 2011. The Glasshouse was designed by Joseph Sung, Michiko Ito, Jing Chen, Gernando Cavalli and Grace Hsu and served as a pop-up cafe. Sung describes the Glasshouse as design nurturing the relationship between construction and innovation, forming an ‘incubator’ for the food within. From outside, the polycarbonate structure looks like a hybrid between a polytunnel and a glasshouse, with soft lighting permeating its translucent walls. It somehow manages to be simultaneously eerie and inviting. Great touches follow within as well, like the playful Peter Pan rabbits from Ligne Roset, and of course plenty of tasty treats as well (Vietnamese delicacies from Viet Hoa). More photos on the next page!TO PAGE 2 of "Glasshouse by VONSUNG"! -----> (Want more visual goodness? See NOTCOT.com + NOTCOT.org)

Creating a successful retail experience is a clever balancing act of many factors; branding, interiors, product, marketing… miss one vital ingredient and the whole soufflé comes caving in. They’ve gone and thrown all the ingredients together, into one super-cool [...]
