Carry-On

A year ago this week the Guangzhou Opera House designed by architect Zaha Hadid opened up in China. The curved timber velodrome was completed in London in preparation for this year’s Olympic Games and Thomas Heatherwick was revealed as designer of the Olympic torch. Industrial designer Marc Newson launched a collection of clothing featuring drawn-on pockets and fake turn-ups, plus Issey Miyake’s creative director Dai Fujiwara announced his decision to stand down. He was later replaced by Yoshiyuki Miyamae. We featured a house with a slide connecting its floors that went on to become one of Dezeen’s most popular stories of all time and we talked to MVRDV architect Winy Maas about the cantilevered holiday home he designed in the English countryside, which you can now see over on Dezeen Screen. Two more alarmingly cantilevered projects also proved popular with readers - a towering ski jump in Norway and a house oversailing a river in Wales. In our comments sections, readers were busy discussing whether Corian was an appropriate material for the interior of a boat and marvelling over a fashion store with stockings stretched across the walls.See all our stories from February 2011 »See our review of last year »

We also featured the new galvanised steel workshops for artist Antony Gormley. We celebrated Valentine’s day with a set of loved-up bookmarks and paper clips that warmed readers’ hearts, and a heart-shaped chair that didn’t. Our most popular stories featured a residential barn extension with oriented strand board covering every surface and a studio that appears to float at the bottom of the garden.Over on Dezeen Screen we’re running a series of architecture movies by Cristobal Palma, a photographer in Chile making short architectural films. The first one features twirling parasols in a Shenzhen square. We’ve also got new Braun models in our 2012 collection on Dezeen Watch Store, which you can now[..]
