Duravit's new OpenSpace Folding Shower: The Dream of Every New Yorker

Years ago as an ID student I did a brief internship with the designer who invented the Biomorph desk. I remember that gig not because of what I learned or because of the product -- I remember not liking it, little snot that I was -- but because we worked out of this guy's apartment in Manhattan and he had a freaking HUGE bathroom. I mean there was an actual full-sized window in there, might have been two. I could have lived in there with two roommates.Every bathroom of every apartment I've ever lived in has been tiny, and my current digs are no exception. So I really, really want Duravit's new folding OpenSpace shower. The concept is simple: It's a corner shower and when not in use, the two walls fold into the corner, so you're not banging into the darn thing while moving around in your airplane-style bathroom. The OpenSpace was unveiled earlier this month at Duravit's "Design Days 2011" event and is not yet on their website.(more...)

Upcoming Exhibition Examines the Design Process of the Silversmith

As industrial designers we're supposed to be well-versed in all manner of materials, able to select just the right wood/metal/plastic/other for the job depending on cost, functionality, aesthetic value, the client's nonsensical demands, et cetera. If you've ever felt like slapping a client -- and don't you lie to me, you know you have -- chances are it's during that materials discussion phase where he asks if you can use a cheaper material to save a couple bucks "But, you know, make it stronger."It must be neat to specialize in just one material, as a silversmith does, and design without the materials question. "Mindful of Silver" is an upcoming exhibition to be held at London's The Goldsmiths' Company that looks at the design process of the modern-day silversmith:Creativity remains at the vortex of the exhibition but whirling round it are the complex, demanding and sometimes pragmatic elements of the design process. Hours of contemplation and practical experimentation are involved before an original, beautifully conceived vessel demonstrating the highest skill of the craft and individual intellect eventually emerges. Throughout the journey, which can be both playful and torturous, each silversmith has to make numerous decisions and incremental adjustments -- it is an insight into these decisions which makes the exhibition so fascinating.[Silversmith] Hector Miller said: "As a designer I am often asked where ideas come from. This exhibition presents some of the creative[..]

Blackbird Guitars

I have designed functional performance products for both elite athletes and musicians. I'm always amazed by how people who are so comfortable in taking risks in what they do, can be very conservative when it comes to the tools that use to take those risks. Which, I suppose, is why sporting equipment and musical instruments can be very slow to change on a core functional level. So when I stumbled on Blackbird Guitars recently, I was pleasantly surprised to see someone breaking through this artificial ceiling in a way that was logical, intentional, and performance driven.Check out the full scoop on their manufacturing process and technology as well ads lots of videos of people playing them >>> HERE(more...)

Researcher behind Liquidmetals Publishes New Blowmolded metal findings

Materials scientist Dr. Jan Schroers is the former Director of Research at Liquidmetal Technologies, the company whose technology Apple licensed last year. LT developed super-strong metals that can be liquified and molded like plastic, opening up a world of possibilities for industrial design, and Schroers opined that future iPhones would be made of the stuff.Liquidmetal is a brand name, but the actual material involved is called BMG, or Bulk Metallic Glass. Dr. Schroers has continued his research into BMGs at Yale University, and together with his team recently released a paper detailing their findings to the Materials Today journal."These alloys look like ordinary metal but can be blow molded just as cheaply and as easily as plastic," Schroers said. So far the team has created a number of complex shapes-including seamless metallic bottles, watch cases, miniature resonators and biomedical implants-that can be molded in less than a minute and are twice as strong as typical steel. The materials cost about the same as high-end steel, Schroers said, but can be processed as cheaply as plastic. The alloys are made up of different metals, including zirconium, nickel, titanium and copper...."The trick is to avoid friction typically present in other forming techniques," Schroers said. "Blow molding completely eliminates friction, allowing us to create any number of complicated shapes, down to the nanoscale."Schroers and his team are already using their new processing technique to[..]

Creative Capacity of Social Business Models

I'm excited that there is an increased interest in creativity in business thinking these days. But what I worry about, and what I've been worrying about for years, is what the creative outcome from it will be. What I'm afraid of is that creatives are coming to the table simply to make more fancy do-dads for the top 1% of the economic pyramid. But could I be wrong? Will they instead make a more meaningful contribution? Below are a few innovative business models from the world market that promote what I see as a laudable combination of creativity and social responsibility. I want to shine a light on these examples and offer some thoughts on how to be inspired by them, in your own business ventures. MICRO ENTREPRENEURSHIPOorja StoveMicro Entrepreneurship is a type of business that creates jobs for poor people. One of the most elegant applications of this principle that I've seen is Oorja Stove. The product in and of itself is innovative because it helps people who traditionally cook on wood fires, which is bad for health and environment, transition to cooking on fires made from agricultural waste pellets. But what is most innovative about this stove is how it's distributed and sold: It is designed so that sales can be handled by people within the communities in which the products are sold, a door-to-door sales force. TIP: If you are thinking about creating a new product or service, then think about how your venture could be designed so that it creates jobs for people who need[..]

Ford's New B-Max. (Shouldn't it be called B-Min?)

Ford has yanked the sheets off of their forthcoming B-Max minivan, which is set to make its official debut at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show. (Concept drawing, above; production model, below.) The design of the tiny three-cylinder van is notable in that it completely lacks B-pillars, those important structural elements featured in every minivan just aft of the front seats; Ford has compensated by strengthening the doors with Boron and designing special hinges to be sure the doors stay fastened together in a crash, maintaining the structure needed to absorb an impact. The result is a more airy feel in the cabin, at least with the doors open.We suspect the B-Max will be Europe/Asia only; Americans, alas, just don't do three cylinders.(more...)
