JR Uses Art (and TEDPrize) to Turn the World INSIDE OUT

Back in October, I was excited to learn that French street artist JR had won the 2011 TED Prize: $100,000 to put towards a cause of his choice. In his recent TED2011 keynote speech he begins to answer the question "Could art change the world?" by sharing his experience as a public artist. This week JR launched the second piece of this answer through his TED Prize project: an opportunity for everyone to change the world through art with their very own JR-style poster printout.INSIDE OUT is a large-scale participatory art project that transforms messages of personal identity into pieces of artistic work. Everyone is challenged to use black and white photographic portraits to discover, reveal and share the untold stories and images of people around the world. These digitally uploaded images will be made into posters and sent back to the project's co-creators for them to exhibit in their own communities. People can participate as an individual or in a group; posters can be placed anywhere, from a solitary image in an office window to a wall of portraits on an abandoned building or a full stadium. These exhibitions will be documented, archived and viewable virtually."Women Are Heroes" in AfricaWatch the full presentation and learn more about JR after the jump →(more...)

*No paper was harmed during the making of this film. from Tommaso Minnetti on Vimeo.Polyedra is celebrating the shared heritage (and auguring future collaboration) between Swiss and Italian graphic design with Italian Design Is Coming Home. The joint effort between 11 Swiss and 11 Italian designers will yield 22 art posters that will be exhibited in Zurich and Milan this year and ultimately compiled in a catalog by Actar. They've also produced a short video (above) documenting the creation of the centerpiece of the project, a painstakingly crafted 2.5m paper model, by Alberto Parise and Giovanni Pasini. There's been a strong link in design between Switzerland and Italy (particularly Milan) going back to the 1940s. Max Huber, Carlo Vivarelli, Walter Ballmer were just a few of the legendary Swiss designers who crossed the Alps to help create the International Typographic School for which Italian (and Swiss) design became renowned.Check out a historical sampling of mutually-inspired product and event posters (including Borsalino, Kardex and Olivetti) after the jump...(more...)

Sieger Design & Dornbracht, pushing Bathroom Boundaries

A few years ago Sieger Design and manufacturer Dornbracht, both based in Germany, collaborated on this striking Supernova bathroom concept. Less a practical exercise and more of a boundary-pushing demonstration along the lines of an automotive manufacturer's concept car, the design focused on the idea of "high-gloss surfaces of the fittings [that] constantly reflect the island's individual laguna-like water zones."
