Solovyovdesign's Brain Bulb

For years, standard cartoon policy dictated that any character suddenly getting a flash of inspiration was represented by a light bulb popping up over the head. Belarus-based ID firm Solovyovdesign updates the concept with a bulb that looks it should be in the head, with its brain-shaped CFL design:Details are non-existent, so we're willing to wager it's just a concept. via emily pilloton/interior design(more...)

Common Elements Used in Wooden UI Design

We all know texture is used a lot in both modern and vintage design, although in many cases of design produced many years ago, noisy and grungy textures were unavoidable. Salone Milan 2011 Preview: Studio DRIFT Presents FLYLIGHT

Amsterdam's Studio DRIFT recently sent along some images of their forthcoming light installation for the Salone del Mobile Milan, the centerpiece of their exhibition at Ventura Lambrate.FLYLIGHT is an interactive light installation composed of 160 glass tubes and based on group behaviour of animals. The behaviour of each individual light has not been programmed, but is dependent on the DNA that has been given to the group. It reacts to the viewer as if it were a flock of starlings or a school of fish. While the photography is intriguing, I would recommend watching the teaser video (after the jump) to get a sense of how it actually works:(more...)

Pro Forma at Volume Gallery: Rich Brilliant Willing Explores the Chamfered Form of Air Shipping Containers

This week, New York-based Rich Brilliant Willing debut a collection of limited edition work, entitled Pro Forma, at Chicago's event-based design gallery Volume. The title translates roughly to "for the sake of form," describing the designers' formal exploration of the economical geometry of air shipping containers, which are chamfered at the nose to fit into the fuselage. RBW transforms this property into a vocabulary for the design of familiar domestic furnishings: a credenza, coffee table, bookshelf, side table, and bar cabinet. Built from materials suited to steamer trunks, the pieces in the collection draws a poetic line from a seldom seen icon of globalization to the "transient nature in the contemporary idea of home."The show opens in Chicago this Friday at 6pm and runs through April 3, 2011. The exact location will be announced on the Volume website soon.Rich Brilliant Willing will also be designing our inaugural Core77 Design Awards trophy. A few more images follow the jump. IBM Smarter Cities Challenge Grant Winners

In case you missed it, IBM announced its Smarter Cities Challenge grant recipients last week. The three-year program pledges up to $50 million in technology and services to up to 100 cities worldwide. This inaugural year awards 24 cities in 5 continents access to IBM's top experts to analyze and recommend ways they can become even better place in which to live, work and play. Cities and projects that received grants included Milwaukee's urban farms, Chengdu's Wireless City Initiative, Baltimore's youth services program and Helsinki's public data visualization systems."We selected these cities because of their commitment to the use of data to make better decisions, and for their desire to explore and act on smarter solutions to the their most pressing concerns," said Stanley S. Litow, IBM vice president of Corporate Citizenship & Corporate Affairs, and President of IBM's Foundation. "The cities we picked are eager to implement programs that tangibly improve the quality of life in their areas, and to create roadmaps for other cities to follow. The stakes have never been greater but we're excited at the prospect of helping cities tackle the most pressing challenges of our time." One of the most exciting projects to come out of the challenge is City Forward, a free, open-platform website that enables users—city planners, academics, researchers, you, me—to access IBM's technologies and services to, "identify patterns, trends and correlations in [city] data that may[..]

Task & Time Management for Designers

As designers and creative folk, we tend to nurture the Right Brain i.e. the part of us that is random, intuitive, spontaneous, subjective and sees the big picture. Organization Porn

The Things Organized Neatly blog is very addictive, particularly to those of us who have poorly-organized tool collections and lofty aspirations. Readers submit photos of anything and everything—coin envelopes, tools of particular usage, vehicle parts—all organized, well, very neatly. Now the porn becomes not about the objects or parts, but simply about the way the objects or parts are arranged. One project recently spotted there that doesn't quite fit the mold, but speaks more to sequential transformation, is Brooklyn-based artist Daniel Bejar's "The Visual Topography of a Generation Gap" project from '06:(more...)

The huge quake and devastating tsunami has left overwhelming damage to the country and we are still facing terrifying conditions. As I have received messages from all over the world, I would like to take this opportunity to extend my sincere appreciation for your warmest concerns. This is the time for us to think what we can really do.
