EXOtique, Digital Fabrication in a Week

What happens when you give four recent architecture grads one week, $500, and an empty foyer? Recently, Ball State University's new Institute for Digital Fabrication invited PROJECTiONE (four recent graduates of the College of Architecture and Planning) to produce a site-specific work fabricated in their facilities. With the help of the students from the Institute, PROJECTiONE completed their project in a week—a single day devoted to design, one day of modeling in Rhino/Grasshopper and materials testing, and three shared days of fabrication, assembly and installation. Their final product, "EXOtique" is a lit, component-based, drop ceiling installed in the west entrance of the campus' architecture building. Explains PROJECTiONE:Our intention was to create a simple, hexagonally based, component system that would act as a lit "drop ceiling" for the space. The ceiling height allows for quite a bit of variation in the surface. Everything was accomplished in Grasshopper besides the input surface from Rhino, this includes all unrolling for fab, label, patterning, and connections. Also, there was no hardware used for connections besides the given hangers for the lamp cords. This cut costs and allowed our materials to work to each other's benefit. Tabs on the styrene lock into the solid acrylic connectors, acting as a rigid sidewall, causing the material to bend within the component as apposed to its edges. This allows all components to meet evenly and create a rigid shell[..]

Book Review: The Industrialization of Design, by Carroll Gantz

A focus on industrial design can make a book reviewer feel a little like a middle child. ID books will appear in the architecture section, occasionally in graphic design and sometimes even in the art section. Rarely is industrial design given focus in the United States. Carroll Gantz's The Industrialization of Design is the first history of design we've seen in quite a while and also serves to explain the diminished status of industrial design in this country as compared to Europe. The book opens tracking the "Twin Revolutions" in industry in the United States and Britain, walking the reader from the origins of design in both countries into the seamless multinational production effort that is most ID today. The cover and interior design lack the polish of a typical design coffee table book but serve to foreshadow the book's functionalist creed. Most industrial design history is taught as composites, taking books with very focused topics (e.g. Bauhaus, LeCorbu, Modernism) and synthesizing them into a relatively linear, if overlapping, narrative. As a former director of the ISDA and long time teacher, Gantz has put all that synthesis in one place, and it's a lot. Each chapter is thematically organized with titles like "The 'New' Decorative Art" or "Dreams of the Future and War," but the main thrust is linear and chronological rather than topical. It's packed with information all the way down to the names of individual craftsmen in clock workshops. Some, like Eli Terry, may be[..]

Dsolv: Compostable Netting Bags Made from Bioresin are Crying Out for Supermarket Uptake

I don't have this problem in the city, but apparently in suburban America, dead leaves are a big deal. Suburbanites have to rake them up off their lawns and put them in large paper bags out by the curb, and a composting company comes by to pick them up. It's difficult to get the leaves in the bags and if it rains, forget about it—the bag disintegrates.Paul Kolada was the principal of an Ohio-based ID firm, one of those workaday companies that does design for companies like Lowes and 3M but whom you've never heard of due to the relative anonymity of our field. Around Christmastime one year, Paul observed Christmas trees being sold out of lots and wrapped in plastic netting for transport, a familiar suburban sight. (more...)

Amazing Examples of Vexel Artwork

Vexel is a neologism for an entirely pixel-based form of raster art that imitates the visual appearance of vector graphics technique (i.e. sharp-edged lines and areas of flat colour or smooth gradient fills). The main difference is that vexels are created using raster layers while vectors are created using vector layers. The word itself is [...]
