Diego Cardenas' Bamboo Cycles

Bamboo bicycles are not new; according to this article, a trade fair in London had one on display in 1894. And while a bicycle made entirely from bamboo might be impossible to make, ID student Diego Cardenas is using the fast-growing stuff to cut down on the metal content by replacing the tubular sections with it. The joints are still made from steel and parts of the frame are reinforced with carbon fiber, but by the looks of it the frame uses about half the metal of an ordinary bike. (more...)

Product Review: Coalesse's Power Pod, Designed by MNML

Here's some intelligent industrial design by Scott Wilson and MNML. The Power Pod, designed for Coalesse, is intended to solve an obvious and underaddressed problem: These days people plug and unplug things all the time. It would be nice to have a power strip within easy access of our workstations for this, but that means putting it out in plain sight—and most powerstrips are ugly as hell, not to mention many still do not address the fact that power adapters are too freaking bulky to fit side by side. I absolutely hate this latter point because it speaks of a real lack of design awareness. The cleanly-designed Power Pod, on the other hand, is easy on the eyes and disappears when not in use by disguising itself as a useful desk accessory. The crusade of Abbey Road

Illustration inspired by the famous photograph or cover of The Beetles, and they replaced the images of big corporate fast food chains. It shows a silent battle between them as they cross, hence the name «the crusade» of those charged with any religious travel to other battles. Studio Neat (aka the Glif Guys) Kickstart the Cosmonaut: A Wide-Grip Stylus for Touch Screens

Tom Gerhardt and Dan Provost are New York-based designers who collaborate under the name Studio Neat. The partnership was borne of their first project, the Glif, already a veritable case study for Kickstarting industrial design. The success of the Glif sufficiently sparked their entrepreneurial spirit and informed their practical know-how, so much so that Gerhardt and Provost recently announced their latest Kickstarter project, the Cosmonaut, just six months after their initial foray. We love to sketch out quick ideas or doodle on our tablets, and using a stylus is much better than a finger for such tasks. We bought several different models currently available on the market but they all suffered the same problem: they were designed to look and feel like a pen. But why? Writing or drawing on the iPad feels nothing like using a pen or pencil. For one, tablets are ideal for low fidelity sketching. Also, it is pretty awkward to rest your palm on the screen of the device because it throws off the capacitive detection. Writing on a tablet feels like writing on a dry erase board: fast, simple, low fidelity. The perfect tablet stylus is one that feels like a dry erase marker.(more...)
