Salone Milan 2011 Preview: 3D modeling in the One to Five Chair Installation by Thomas Feichtner

Viennese designer Thomas Feichtner will be exhibiting One to Five as part of the Design Vision Austria Exhibition during Salone 2011 in Milan's Zona Tortona. The installation is comprised of ten previously unreleased chair designs by Feichtner, presented as 1:5 scale models—hence, the title of the exhibition. For those with a particular interest in material design, the chairs are made of Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) using FDM rapid prototyping. In fact, the exhibition is also intended to be a comment on advances in 3D modeling technology:Developing a design all the way from a sketch to a functioning product is typically a long process which sometimes even goes on for years. The models allow the sketches to become three-dimensional objects, but their small scale entails that they remain very much in the design phase. New rapid prototyping technologies also allow concepts to surface for which no concrete approach to realization has yet been developed. In such cases, production techniques, materials and colors remain completely open. This is an experiment which seeks to present designs not as finished projects but rather as processes which have yet to be concluded. Producers can then take up designs and continue their development, thus themselves becoming part of the process almost from the very beginning. This is Feichtner's open way of working with ideas which, at this stage, typically remain somewhat hidden.Larger images after the jump...(more...)

Urban Water Needs: Can We Keep Up? Visualization by Hal Watts and Matthew Laws

Matthew Laws and Hal Watts, a recent graduate and current student of the Royal College of Art, recently created this rather clever data visualization to convey projected water consumption. "Urban Water Needs: Can We Keep Up?" is a real-life take on topographical bar graph infographics—a fresh analogue approach," according to Watts and Laws—earning a runner-up nod in Visualizing.org's World Water Day Challenge.Combining their engineer's precision with creativity honed at the London Royal College of Art, Matt and Hal first designed a world map entirely out of cheap kitchen sponges. They then poured water onto each country in amounts proportional to that its expected urban water consumption in 2030. Elegantly literal, the sponges grow in height according to how thirsty the country will be, generating a stark topography of future needs for urban domestic water. As more people crowd into ever-expanding cities over the next 20 years, those cities will experience huge increases in the demand for domestic water - the kind used for cooking, cleaning, sanitation as opposed to industry and agriculture. It's easy to see that the needs will not be equitably distributed. As Matt and Hal note, "While this will have little impact on some countries, others will need to develop large new infrastructures. Some countries will be able to afford this more easily than others."Check out a short making-of video after the jump...(more...)

More Great Concept Work from Mac Funamizu: The Zimmer Phone, the Peel Notifier

It still rankles me when I think of the ignorant blogger who months ago insisted Apple had "reached the limits of industrial design" with the iPhone 4, his idiotic assertion being that Cupertino's glass rectangle could sustain no further modifications. What a tool.Case in point, check out Mac Funamizu's latest concept phone, which manages to breathe life into a perfect little rectangle by the means of some subtle curves in all the right places. (For the record, Funamizu's design is not branded "iPhone-" anything, it's just a concept design of his called the Zimmer.) I want to touch this thing so bad it pains me to watch the animation:(more...)

"30 Days of Simple" Promo: Win Free Simplehuman Products

I love the stuff put out by Simplehuman, that purveyor of useful stainless steel objects. And now they're running a promotional where 30 of you (or hopefully, 29 of you and one of me) can win some of their product. The 30 Days of Simple website has a simple premise: Click on one of their objects, watch a micro-video about it, then enter your e-mail address to be entered in a drawing for that object. Get lucky and you can win like Charlie Sheen.Anyone can enter (even lowly installation designers) and as the name implies, the promo will run for 30 days. They start picking winners—one each day—on Friday, but the site is live and waiting for entries right now. And in the best traditions of viral marketing, the campaign gives you a second chance to win if you can infect a friend.(more...)

Design Within Reach in 3D

There's nothing quite like being able to see that couch you love so much in the showroom, lined up and laid out in the setting of your own living room. Today, Design Within Reach is launching an online design tool that allows customers to do just that. The Design Within Reach 3D Room Planner uses mydeco.com's unique 3D room design technology: visitors to the DWR site can upload a floor plan or customize a room template, furnish their room with DWR's accurate 3D furniture models and generate a photorealistic rendering to save and share with their larger community. The 3D planning tool gives users three options to start designing: using a furnished room, an empty room or uploading a 2D floorplan. Customize rooms by moving walls to the correct size and shape, drag and drop windows and doors, choose paint colors, wallpaper and floor coverings. Furnish rooms with hundreds of modern classics from DWR's catalog—Herman Miller, Knoll, Cassina and DWR Design Studio—using dimension or color search tools. In just 2 hours you will receive a high-quality rendering that you can save or share with the community for comment. Get the tutorial and check out some of examples of rooms built with the technology after the jump or go straight to DWR.com to check it out for yourself. (more...)
