Jeff Tiedeken's Gravity Bike Gets Up to 60MPH

Similar in minimalist philosophy (if not in form) to JRuiter + Studio's city bike is this so-calledGravity Bike by Jeff Tiedeken, a.k.a. Monkey Likes Shiny. As you can see there's no drivetrain to speak of and the crankarms has been locked, where the pedals have been replaced with mere foot peg holders. In testing, Tiedeken has reportedly done 60 m.p.h. plus on this thing. Someone get this man a GoPro camera!(more...)

Salone Milan 2011 Preview: "Drawingmachine" by Eske Rex at MINDCRAFT11

Yesterday, we got a glimpse of some of the leading-edge Danish designs that will be exhibited at MINDCRAFT11. Today, we'll take a closer look at one project that caught my eye: Eske Rex's "Drawingmachine." (Which is not to say that the other designers' projects are not worthy of elaboration, just that Rex's work happens to represent the artsy end of the spectrum.)The sculpture, for lack of a better term, does exactly what its name suggests, though this description obviously leaves a lot to the imagination. The press release does a better job:Drawingmachine is a construction involving two pendulums, each suspended from a tower construction and connected through "drawing arms" and moveable joints. A ballpoint pen resting on a drawing surface covered with paper is mounted at the point where the pendulums come together. The pendulums are set in motion by hand, and their movements are represented on the paper. The movements of the pendulums affect the entire room, and the experience engages the beholder's body. While the rhythmic repetitions cause the beholder to pause, the drawing emerges on the paper.Requisite video teaser after the jump...(more...)

Further Products: Turning Restaurant Waste into Saleable Goods

"Here's what I think of your cooking!"Last year, I reviewed NatureMill's Automatic Compost Bin for a "Living With..." review and I'm pleased to report it's still going strong. What I really wish is that they'd make (and effectively market) restaurant-sized versions. Walking my dogs at night, I pass restaurant after restaurant stacking huge bags of food trash out on the curb. All of that has to be hauled away, which requires big trucks filled with gasoline; but what I've learned from composting is that most food waste is water that just evaporates, which cuts down on its weight drastically. If restaurants broke down their food waste on site, at least in major cities like New York, I estimate the fuel savings would be enormous. Now there's a product that uses similar sourcing for entirely different results: Further Products makes a line of soap, lotion and candles made from vegetable oil extracted from restaurant food waste. And not just any restaurant: Further has gone after L.A.'s high-end eateries and landed Mario Batali's chowhouse as a partner. This is a great example of a brilliant green concept paired with a shrewd marketing plan—one that I hope inspires others.via the dieline(more...)

Combatting Colony Collapse with "The Bee Station" by Jamie Hutchinson

Thoughtful design succeeds on multiple levels beyond aesthetic appeal: solving problems, starting discussions and, at best, raising awareness social or environmental issues that would otherwise slip below the radar of public consciousness. Jamie Hutchinson's "Bee Station" is an excellent example of all of the above, bringing attention to the "alarming and rapid decline of bees [in the UK]," also known as Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD).Hutchinson himself learned of the problem through the RSPB—Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, for the uninitiated&mdash, which highlighted the facts: bees throughout gardens in urban UK are now so overworked that they barely have the energy to fly and fulfill the critical role as pollinators.(more...)
