Periodic Lectures: Ellen Lupton on D.I.Y. Career Paths

"Blogs are so yesterday."Ellen Lupton spoke at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia Tuesday evening as part of the five-part lecture series, Periodic Lectures on Design. The lectures, sponsored by the University of the Art's Corzo Center for the Creative Economy and DesignPhiladelphia, are intended to create a dialogue about innovative and creative ways of navigating through design and business. Ellen Lupton, who believes "lectures should never be longer than a TV show," gave a humorous and inspiring lecture on her self-published books—intended to help others use design as a tool. She also addressed how books "have become a site of frenzied social activity" for a generation assumed to have moved away from print. To set the tone, Lupton admitted: "People often assume I'm shy but once I get a phallic object in my hand..." [insert smirk and awkward laughs here] "You should try it, ladies. It's nice." (more...)

HMV Logo Origin Story: A Painter, a Dog, a Dead Guy and a Record Player

Up above is what we Americans think of as the RCA logo, having grown up seeing it everywhere. But the logo first belonged to British entertainment company HMV, which is in fact named after the original painting on which the logo is based, called "His Master's Voice."Francis Barraud was a Liverpudlian painter who had a brother named Mark. In the late 1800s, after Mark died, Francis inherited a bunch of his stuff: An early cylinder phonograph player, cylinder recordings of Mark's voice, and Mark's dog, a fox terrier named Nipper.(more...)

Salone Milan 2011: Food on the Table, ceramics by Marre Moerel

The Dutch designer (by way of London's RCA, New York and now Madrid) Marre Moerel debuted "Food on the Table" a new collection of ceramic tableware and lighting at the Poetry Happens show in the Lambrate design district here in Milan. The pieces are cast directly from animal organs—cow hearts, pig intestines, sheep brains, bull testicles—and artfully immortalized as overhead lighting, plates, jugs and serving trays. I personally loved the hoof pendant light and the liver tray. Moerel notes:Through this process of immortalizing the animal's interior we are confronted with the brutality and animal instinct which exists in all of us. At the same time we are shown the beauty inherent in the rawness of nature, which we continue to be disconnected from, and which we can only hope to rediscover.See more images of her process after the jump!(more...)

Forgotten Objects: The HMV Electric Fire

Ah, Machine Age, why did you have to leave us?That there is my eBay Find of the Week, an "Electric Fire" manufactured and sold in the UK, probably prior to World War II. (Interestingly enough it was manufactured by HMV, the record company.) Sexily named the Lincoln Model F3, it had a second heating element that could be switched on to augment the first, staving off that damp British chill. Parabolic aluminum fins reflected and distributed the heat.(more...)

Photoshop for Tablets Coming

Yesterday Adobe announced their forthcoming Photoshop Touch Software Development Kit, which will be bundled with their Creative Suite 5.5. The PTSDK (unfortunate acronym, those first four letters) will let users go back and forth, Photoshop-wise, between their tablet and main computer. The possibilities are intriguing; using an iPad as a palette window and large trackpad sounds kind of neat, but the idea of being able to manipulate photos by hand, touching them directly, sounds extremely cool. While we're waiting for the PTSDK and CS 5.5, feast your eyes on this recent Adobe demo of Photoshop—real Photoshop, not that Express nonsense—on an iPad. Check out the wicked layers trick that happens around 1:06.(more...)

The Self-Sharpening Pencil, Just 20 Years Too Late

The Mitsubishi Pencil Company's Kuru Toga model is a couple of years old and features a gear inside that rotates the pencil lead every time it's put to paper, continually keeping a sharp, centered point on it: An amusing piece of belated overengineering--I could've really used one of these back in the days when we actually did hand draftings. This is kind of like making a carbon-fiber T-square.(more...)
