Cristian Grossi is one of the most famous contemporary Italian illustrators. He has released his latest project, Chroma. Chroma is based on speculation of pain. The pain, the disgust, the bad, are debunked by a Wharol’s method and are transformed into an aesthetic of grace. Design You Trust RSS Feed | Design You Trust on [...]

More Circuit-Bonded Furniture from BRC Designs: "Binary Chairs 01 & 02"

Two weeks ago, we brought you "Binary Table 01" by BRC Designs, a coffee table made out of salvaged electronics. Designer Benjamin Rollins Caldwell is back with the next two pieces in the Binary series (though we can't promise he will continue on a binary release schedule), chairs 01 and 02 (short for BNR011000110110100001100001011010010111001001- 00110001 and BNR011000110110100001100001011010010111001001- 00110010, respectively).Like the table, the chairs are made from re-purposed computer equipment—veritable fossils of the Information Age—inside and out:The Understucture for both the Binary Chair 01 and Binary Chair 02 are made from the same outdated industrial printer which was disassembled and then riveted together and bent to the proper form. The surfaces of the chairs are completely covered with a collage of motherboards, computer chips, lcd screens and hard drive disks held in place by sheet metal screws. The chair also has an interactive quality as the hard drive disks can be spun, the telephone keys and other buttons can be pressed, and the antennae raised and adjusted. The Binary Chair 01 also has a glass panel showing the inside of the chair which can be revealed by removing the back seat cushion.(more...)

Student Killed in Lathe Accident

We're saddened to report that last week a Yale student was killed when her hair became caught in the lathe she was working on. Michele Dufault was an astronomy and physics major due to graduate in just a few weeks, and she was working on a project late at night in a school machine shop when the horrific accident occurred. As industrial design students we're often around dangerous machinery. The realities of scheduling might find us pulling all-nighters--and then working with blowtorches or tablesaws, and the lack of sleep can make us forget basic safety like tying one's hair back. We hope machinery-using students will learn from Dufault's terrible accident and double-check their safety procedures prior to using machinery. Our sincerest condolences go out to Dufault's family.(more...)

Salone Milan 2011: More Than It's Worth by Nathan Paoletta

To make these bowls, twenty dollars worth of quarters and nickels were melted and dripped over a form. This year in Milan, Nathan D. Paoletta debuted More Than It's Worth, a series of bowls drip-casted from 20 dollars worth of nickels, quarters, demerara sugar, and blank dvds (which we were told were blowtorched into shape). The project is part of Loaded, presented by the School of the Art Institute of Chicago at Spazio Rossana Orlandi. The exhibition, developed over two semesters, explored the potentials of two historically catalytic materials: iron and sugar. Nathan's work investigates physical expressions of value, reconfiguring familiar metrics by which we understand worth. The bowl shape provides a familiar lens through which we can compare the physical aspects of $20 worth of sugar to $20 worth of DVDs.More photos after the jump.Three of the four pieces in the series.(more...)

Visualize Time in Color Form with ZIIIRO's New Wristwatch Designs

When we first posted about ZIIIRO's debut collection of wristwatches at the very end of last year, we commented on how designers can't quite seem to exhaust the possibilities of the wristwatch.ZIIIRO has come up with yet another way to represent time in a circle, as in the tried-and-true analog clock design, with their second pair of watches, the "Aurora" and the "Orbit":What we are experimenting on Aurora is to reduce both swirls into a single element without taking away any functionality from the watch. Hour indicator which is on the bottom layer uses a 100% to 0% blue gradient and the Minute indicator uses a 100% to 0% yellow gradient. Overlapping both layers create a color mixing result thus producing an ever changing clock face color! It allows the user to learn a new way of interpreting time by understanding mixture of different colors. The Orbit is inspired by space and solar system. We want to build ZIIIRO as the 'Solar system of time' and therefore the hour and minute orbits around the parent star ZIIIRO. Colored orb represents the Hour and white orb shows the minute on Orbit. And most importantly, all these models are interchangeable with each other! All the watches in the rubber bracelet series: Gravity, Aurora and Orbit.(more...)

Pointless Design Research?

This makes no sense to me, but perhaps you academic types can draw something from it. Web design, development and marketing firm Boston Interactive has put up a website called buggy-whips.com, which looks like a lame April Fool's gag two weeks too late. The faux website purports to sell buggy whips--you know, those things for driving horses onward--and has ripped off Apple's website design to do it. Their explanation:The buggy whip is commonly known as an analogy of businesses disrupted by innovation. It is often cited in business cases as one of the industries that did not adapt with the advent of the automobile, and thus began the demise of the buggy whip industry. The roots of the analogy can be traced to Theodore Levitt, a Harvard Business School professor. In the web design industry we often hear about the superiority and creativity of the Apple website. Functionally, there is no technical innovation or advanced features. It is a simple wrapper with sexy, eye popping product photography, yet somehow it works. So we decided to compose an experiment to test its viability. We took a product that has been considered virtually obsolete for over 90 years and built a website using a simple, apple-istic wrapper to promote it.Boston Interactive is calling it a "cognitive social acceptance experiment." Uh, good luck with that, guys.(more...)
