Competition: Design for the Real World REDUX

Design, if it is to be ecologically responsible and socially responsive, must be revolutionary and radical in the truest sense. It must dedicate itself to...maximum diversity with minimum inventory...or doing the most with the least. -Victor J. PapanekIn honor of the University of Applied Arts Vienna's acquisition of visionary design educator Victor J. Papanek's archive, the Museum of Arts and Design (MAD) launched the Design for the Real World REDUX competition. Established and emerging designers are invited to submit innovative and radical examples of ecologically responsible and/or socially responsive designs that address everyday problems or social needs in the spirit of Victor J. Papanek's philosophy. Written forty years ago, Design for the Real World laid out the tenets for social design "by asking practitioners to see their field in a larger context," explains David Revere McFadden, Chief Curator at MAD. "For him, designers must take responsibility for the impact that their creations can have on the quality of life of individuals and societies." A pioneer in advocating for a more human, ecologically and ethically centered design practice, Papanek was trained in architecture and design, a practicing industrial designer and an avid anthropologist spending time in communities including Navajo, Inuit, and Balinese. The distinguished jury represents leaders in the field including Stefan Sagmeister, Fiona Raby, John Thackara and our very own Allan Chochinov!Design for the[..]

Instapak "Reverse Molding" Protective Packaging

A company called Sealed Air makes a product called Instapak Foam-in-Place packaging, which provides an interesting and effective way to safely ship packages with irregular shapes. The Instapak comes in flat form and is loaded with two chemicals, separated by a bladder. The user applies pressure to burst the internal seal, then provides agitation, and the resultant chemical reaction forms an expanding foam that "grows" around whatever it is you're trying to ship. Using two of these, you can essentially reverse-mold the item. Check it out:(more...)

Designs for life won't make you a living

The Bouroullecs' Aim lamps for Flos"All that we see or seem / Is but a dream within a dream" -Edgar Allan PoeThe 50th Milan furniture fair was crawling with millionaires—but Justin McGuirk argues in the Guardian that designers are being exploited by these same millionaires in making work for free. The trouble is that the royalty system was introduced in the 1950s, when Italy was still the furniture manufacturer to the world. In those days, the risks of a royalty-only payment were worth taking. With an entire country to modernise and a rising middle class, a piece of modern design could shift hundreds of thousands of units. But with the advent of cheap manufacturing in China and budget retailers such as Ikea, Italian furniture is now a luxury industry. Not only do they sell less, there's more competition. And yet no up-and-coming designer would dream of turning down an opportunity from a manufacturer, because there are hundreds of others waiting to take their place if they do.This year journalists quizzed manufacturers about their payment structures, and posted whatever they could dig up on Twitter through #milanuncut, a feed that asks, "designers, journalists, manufacturers to engage in an honest discussion about the industry and answer questions such as: Do designers get a raw deal from brands? Are royalty deals unfair? Is the design world a slave to the media? Who makes all the real money? Are there better ways for designers to do business? Has design lost its[..]
