Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? Check Her iPhone Tracker

In September of last year, a Frenchman named Paul Corbis published an article on his website pointing out that the iPhone does something unexpected: It saves the location of every single cell phone tower it ever pinged off of from the time it was first activated. In other words, it stores a complete record of your whereabouts. The article seems to have gone largely unnoticed by the public. Now two British developers, Alasdair Allan (Senior Research Fellow at the University of Exeter) and Pete Warden (an ex-Apple software engineer) have released an open-source app called iPhone Tracker. It retrieves the data your iPhone is already automatically storing and displays it, providing a cool if somewhat creepy visualization of where you were at any given time.(more...)

Spotlight On Design for America: DfA x Dartmouth, Q&A with Sami Nerenberg

Design for America (DfA) is a network of student-led studios creating local and social impact through interdisciplinary design. DfA equips our generation with the mind-set and skill-set to create social impact. We are a network of student-led design studios that Look Locally, Create Fervently, and Act Fearlessly. Recently, DfA stopped by the Dartmouth campus for an introduction to the program.1. DefineSami Nerenberg, Chief Expansion Officer of Design for America (DfA), has been on the road for weeks visiting leading universities like Stanford, Cornell and Dartmouth. DfA has come full-circle with this last stop, as the program's founder Liz Gerber first found inspiration for unconventional design education during Dartmouth's outdoors freshmen orientation. "I realized the potential of peer-to-peer learning and transformation outside of the traditional classroom," said Gerber. "I danced the Salty Dog rag with the first years...then sent them off on their trips with a sense of excitement of what they would learn from each [other] and about themselves..."2. DiscoverMore than seventy participants from all College academic departments filled the room—anthropologists, geographers, English majors and the engineers, of course. The Innovation Workshop started off with very little introduction before diving right into the problem: helping out elderly people living in rural New Hampshire/Vermont. Four personas, composed of a mixture of both reality and fiction, were proposed to the[..]

AlessiLux Reimagines the Light Bulb

The shape of the original light bulb is a beautiful thing: Functional and manufacturable according to the glassblowing technology available at the time. The globular part distributed light more evenly and tapered down to the narrower "screw" part to keep light sockets a manageable size.In the years since its invention we've seen the ugly spiral CFL shape and Philips' alien-looking LED bulb, but now Alessi is really breaking the mold with their AlessiLux bulb collection, manufactured by Foreverlamp. Designed by Giovanni Alessi Anghini, Gabriele Chiave and Frederic Gooris, the AlessiLux bulbs come in more varieties than you can shake a stick at:(more...)
