Police Officers: Information Overload?

Police information technology is advancing at a fast pace: the benefits of real-time access to warrants, maps, FBI databases, and DMV records are indisputable. But putting a laptop in a police cruiser added a hazard no one considered—many police officers now drive with their knees. And who can blame them? Information going into an emergency could very likely save your life. No police officer is going to pull over to the side of the road to type on his Toughbook in the middle of a 911 call.New Hampshire's infamous Car 54 Project attempted to solve some of the multitasking problems with voice-activated controls. However, Car 54 is notorious for breaking right when you need it. Touchscreens aren't much better—the screens become unusable on cold winter days.Does the latest technology dictate that police officers necessarily become a hazard to themselves and to others on the road, or is there a better solution out there? Sound off on discussion boards.(more...)

Cause and Effect

«Last week, a wall that Teazer, Numskull and Roach had painted in Camperdown, was painted over by someone (owners, real estate agents, council….?) without the artists knowing. Thermochromic Urinal

Why wasn’t I born a man? I would have made such great use of this thermo-urinal. Imagine peeing on a wall and seeing it change color… Whoa! And what do we get? What is the most creative piece of technology that women even pee on? That’s right, that’s right. A pregnancy test. And even that [...]

Gigwalk Pays You to Take Cell Phone Photos

The effects of whatever engineering team first managed to wedge a camera into a cell phone are incalculable. There are more dopey party photos of you on Facebook than you care to think about; parents are able to capture spontaneous and never-to-be-repeated moments of toddler hilarity that go viral on YouTube; citizen journalists lucky or unlucky enough to record plane crashes, disasters and explosions receive payouts from news outlets. Now a company called Gigwalk aims to capitalize on the sheer ubiquity of cell phone cameras in a clever way. Gigwalk serves as a connector between companies that need data and the millions of us toting iPhones (yes, just iPhones, at least for now). Let's say, for instance, TomTom needs verification that a particular street is one-way for their navigation services. The call goes out to a nearby Gigwalker—that's one of you who's signed up to offer your services—you snap a photo of the relevant street sign on your way to the subway, upload the photo, and are paid for your trouble. It doesn't stop there, of course.(more...)

Things That Look (and Sound) Like Other Things: Coat Hanger Chair

Italian design/e-commerce platform Stylemylife—who brought us Max Battaglia & Matteo Mochi's Pratonzolo—is back with "Size," a chair made out of coat hangers. For its nominal similarity to Joey Zeledon's "Coat Check Chair," "Size" is a different beast, both in concept and in execution. It may not have the secondary functionality of Zeledon's semi-viral design, but at least (it looks like) you can actually sit on it.(more...)

Free Handwritten Fonts

Masana, BabyDoll, Gameful, Rock Salt – these words could, perhaps, easily suit as the names for some music bands. However, they have nothing to do with music, because these are all the names of computer fonts, sharing one similar feature – they are all handwritten fonts. Handwriting belongs to the earliest forms of typography or [...]
