Aeron Tozier: Working Out the Design Language of Carbon Fiber

Good designers mess around with new materials to discover their distinct properties, creating forms they could not have made with the previous generation's materials. Through their workshop experimentation we eventually get objects like the bentwood Thonet chair, the Eameses bent-plywood furniture, Robin Day's polyprop stacking chair, et cetera. We've yet to see a definitive object emerge using carbon fiber, but one of the designers seeking it is architect/industrial designer Aeron Tozier. Tozier's Ascension line of furniture combines quilted leather and resin-coated brass with the wispy-yet-sturdy structures carbon fiber is capable of being formed into.(more...)

Blain/Southern Presents The Curious Image by Jeroen Verhoeven

Jeroen Verhoeven is one of the principals of Demakersvan, a Rotterdam-based studio he founded with his twin brother Joep and Judith de Graauw, who they met while studying at Design Academy Eindhoven. Last week saw the opening of his first solo show in the UK, The Curious Image, at London's Blain/Southern gallery. The exhibition includes two disparate works, both from 2010: "Lectori Salutem," a retro-futuristic chrome desk that marks the intersection of streamlined modernity and machine-age craftsmanship, and "Virtue of Blue," a chandelier "featuring 500 solar panels cut into the shapes of four different breeds of butterfly," combining the decorative arts with contemporary functionality.(more...)

Kai Hsing x John Cho Moore = "Beauty through Bamboo"

Filmmaker Kai Hsing recently posted this video about industrial designer John Cho Moore's handmade bamboo, canvas and leather bags.Besides the bag itself, everything from the materials and hardware to the production value and content are absolutely gorgeous. I'm not sure if it's Hsing's excellent filming and editing or Moore's pristine workshop and meticulous technique, but it's so composed as to seem staged. If only every ID process piece were produced this well...(more...)

Backcountry Burner Creator's Counterpoint

Yesterday's post on Devin Montgomery's (successfully*) Kickstarted Backcountry Burner, and its seeming similarity to other chimney kettles, has kicked up the veritable shitstorm of comments, e-mails and debate on the nature of product evolution versus copying. Montgomery himself took severe issue with our wording, pointing out that our implication was that Kelly Kettles owns the chimney kettle idea (they do not) and that we accused him of unethical behavior, which he cheerfully debunked. Our apologies! To set the record straight, Montgomery took the time to write in to Core77 and specifically describe what places his project in the evolutionary category:[Yesterday's post] suggests that the Backcountry Boiler is a modified Kelly Kettle, or worse a "copy," and it simply is not. It is the state-of-the-art chimney kettle, an entire class of products of which the Kelly Kettle is only one (albeit the best marketed one).Montgomery goes on to list a host of other chimney-kettle-producing companies, then gets down to the nitty gritty: What, exactly, his design brings to the table. As to what the Backcountry Boiler does add to the state-of-the-art of chimney kettles, it is quite a lot. Before I first published pictures of the Backcountry Boiler (without the name) in an online forum in 2009, the state-of-the art weighed 21 oz, took up approx 251 ci of pack space, and could effectively boil 20 oz of water. The prototype I created weighed 6 oz, took up approx 90 ci of pack space, and could[..]

NY Design Week 2011: RAAD Architects' "Chicken Co-Op"

Although they had set up shop at one end of the BKLYN Designs booth, RAAD studio is actually based in Lower Manhattan. Nevertheless, their piece had a distinctly Brooklyn-DIY quality to it: among the myriad chairs, desks, lamps and other (international) contemporary furniture at the ICFF this year, RAAD's "Chicken Co-op" came completely out of left field. It's more or less what its pithy title suggests: a ritzy take on a chicken coop (and arguably the biggest leap forward in coop design and technology ever), which makes for "a perfect oddball modernist addition to a city terrace or roof garden." (For the record, it is perfectly legal to raise chickens in New York City.)Of course, the unconventional piece would scarcely merit a mention if it wasn't well-executed...(more...)

SMIT Tensile Solar: lightweight, modular, solar power

We've been a fan of Brooklyn-based SMIT (Sustainably Minded Interactive Technology) since we first saw their modular and beautiful wind-powered solar panels, "Solar Ivy" at MoMA's Design and the Elastic Mind exhibit back in '08. They recently launched a new product, Tensile Solar, weatherproof and structurally reinforced photovoltaic modules that act almost like a fabric that can not only protect, but power. Designing with adaptation in mind, each photovoltaic module is an interchangeable part of the membrane structure; modules can easily be replaced without affecting the entire system. As SMIT explains on their website:Tensile Solar is a system designed with the rapid evolution of photovoltaic technology in mind. As PV industry leaders roll out new and more efficient thin film solar panels, Tensile Solar can seamlessly integrate the latest technology. Tensile Solar can meet the financial, environmental and aesthetic demands of a wide range of projects by utilizing solar technologies with different characteristics. Organic PV is the first type of photovoltaic to be free of toxins and completely recyclable. Amorphous silicon can reach its peak performance in cloudy conditions. CIGS performs well in low light and is currently the most efficient thin film technology in direct sunlight.(more...)
