The Bamboo Bike Studio - Q&A with Marty Odlin

Bamboo bikes have apparently been documented as early as 1894, but there seems to be a recent surge of interest in the concept, which takes the sustainable appeal of cycling to the next level. The Bamboo Bike Studio (BBS) was founded by Marty Odlin, Justin Aguinaldo, and Sean Murray in 2008. Located in Brooklyn, NY, the BBS teaches workshops on bamboo bike building. We had a chance to talk to them about where they come from and where they're headed.Core77: What exactly is the Bamboo Bike Studio?Marty Odlin: The Bamboo Bike Studio is a collaborative workshop for bicycle design and bicycle making. We have shops in Brooklyn and San Francisco, we are opening in Toronto this summer, and have launched a build-at-home or build-at-school kit. It is built around the idea of giving access to the bike making to as many people as possible. We are a social venture, and have set up the world's first mass production bamboo bicycle factory to provide low-cost bicycles to local markets in Kumasi, Ghana. We have also taught dozens of high school students how to build a frame from scratch.Where did the concept come from? The concept for the Bamboo Bike Studio grew directly out of my experiences as a product designer at K2 Sports. I had an incredible experience getting products made, pulling together a diverse supply chain, traveling around China and Korea, seeing the factory floors. When it came time to ship the products back to the States, we stuffed everything in cardboard boxes and[..]

3D Systems Acquires Freedom Of Creation (Companies, Not Concepts)

Hot on the heels of this morning's announcement about Ponoko, we have some more news from the exciting world of 3D printing: South Carolina-based, Nasdaq-listed (TDSC) 3D printing institution 3D Systems has acquired Amsterdam's Freedom of Creation, a design and research company that specializes in the same.Over the past years the 3D printing industry has been picking up speed, moving the technology towards mainstream adoption... This strategic move helps to realize Freedom Of Creations' bold plans with 3D printing for both the near and distant future. The acquisition was actually finalized and announced a couple weeks ago (at the cusp of our NY Design Week coverage), but it's definitely worth mentioning here. Considering that 3D Systems was founded in 1986—"with the invention of the first Stereolithography Rapid Prototyping system"—and FOC has been honing their 3D craft for over a decade now as well, it's safe to say that their shared expertise will raise the bar for rapid prototyping design and technologies in years to come.(more...)

Military Transport Airplane Interior Leaves Civilians Nothing to Complain About

Next time you think you've got a crappy, complaint-worthy seat on an airplane, take a look at how the U.S. Armed Forces fly troops out to Afghanistan and you'll probably change your tune. As you can see there's not a lot of overhead bin space, there's no such thing as a window seat and the troops fly with most of their gear on.This image is from The New York Times' excellent "A Year at War" multimedia feature, which combines still photos and video with narration from the troops to provide an eye-opening look at what deployment entails. (If you're sneaking a look at work, plug in some headphones; you'll need the audio explanations to understand what's being shown on-screen.)(more...)

Yugo Nakamura's FRAMED Brings Moving Art to Your Walls

You might recognize the aesthetic of this project, as Yugo Nakamura is the Tokyo-based consultant designer that was tapped by Uniqlo to do their interface design. Nakamura's latest project (done in conjunction with Interior/Product Designer and fellow Tokyoite Yoshihiro Saitoh and Taiwan's Om Inc. design & engineering firm) is called FRAMED.FRAMED is a rather Apple-like project in the sense that these guys have looked at a bunch of existing technologies and figured out how to put them together to create a rich and compelling experience, with elements of it old enough to be familiar but new enough to be lustworthy. At its core, FRAMED consists of a Samsung flatscreen, a PC computer and a web interface, but to define it by its constituent parts is rather like calling an iPod a hard drive and a screen.(more...)

Repurposed Architecture: The Shopping of the Bulls at Barcelona's Las Arenas

While Pamplona's Plaza de Toros is still active and intact, Barcelona's Las Arenas bullring held its last bullfighting event in 1977, and had fallen into disrepair by the 1990s. As part of a multi-year project, Las Arenas was renovated under lead architect Richard Rogers into a "mixed-use leisure, entertainment and office complex" including a shopping mall.Las Arenas officially opened yesterday, and one out of every ten Barcelonans reportedly showed up to check it out. In the photo above, you can see the building's been crowned with a 360-degree rooftop esplanade:The most spectacular aspect of the intervention is the inclusion of a 100-metre-diameter habitable 'dish' with a 76-metre-diameter domed roof, floating over the façade of the bullring and structurally independent from it to cover the various activities taking place below. This 'plaza in the sky' incorporates large terraces around the perimeter with space for cafés and restaurants with stunning views over the city. While one might imagine that pushing bullfighting aside to make room for shopping would gall Spanish cultural preservationists, a reported 70% of Spaniards "remain indifferent to the sport." The project was not without its problems and controversy, however, largely stemming from the type of head-butting a bull might find familiar. You can read about the troubled history here.(more...)
