"Living With" Product Review: Humanscale's Zon Air Purifier Puts You in a Bubble of Freshness

Earlier this year Peter Hall of DesignInquiry wrote up a fantastic case study and origin story of Humanair's Air Purifier, now re-branded the Zon Air Purifier. After six months with the unit, we now bring you the "Living With" product review. If you work in an open-plan office, there are certain things that belong to everyone and certain things that belong just to you. That light coming in from the windows and the overhead lamps is for everyone; the task lamp on your desk provides light just for you. The electricity piped in is for everyone, but the outlets under your desk are just for you to plug into. But one thing that you typically cannot get is your own air supply. This is an area that Humanscale is addressing with their Zon Air Purifier. Their goal was to provide a desktop source of clean air, qualitatively different than the air piped into the larger space around you, that would essentially encase the user in a sort of bubble of freshness.(more...)

Get Your Freak On: A Romantic Present-Day Imagined

As an uncannily relevant follow-up to Willem Van Lancker's excellent essay on craftsmanship and its implications—namely the resurgent (albeit often misguided) DIY approach as a means to achieve authenticity—I just noticed that the Kickstarter campaign for Freaker USA is nearly funded just got Kickstarted. [Ed. Note: After stalling at about halfway-funded for the past week or so, it jumped to about $40,000 when I wrote this article in the morning; as of press time, the project is a go.]The product itself isn't particularly noteworthy—it's a knit beer koozie that comes in a handful of funky styles—but I'm highly intrigued by their marketing strategy. Where Will was rather judicious in his characterization of the much-maligned hipster, Freaker founder Zach Crain goes all-in with the aesthetic: his Kickstarter video features every trope from facial hair and thrift store rummaging to a faux-infomerical segment, a quasi-throwback hip-hop reference, emphasis on media (including the social kind), young people, wacky haircuts, etc. ad nauseam.(more...)

The China-fication of GM?

Like Ralph Gilles, Bryan Nesbitt is an industrial designer who scaled corporate America's ladder to reach that lofty executive level. The Art Center grad, who designed Chrysler's PT Cruiser and the Chevy HHR, is GM's head of design in North America, and GM has just announced that Nesbitt is going to Shanghai with a new job title: Vice President of GM International Design.Interestingly, the Times reports that ...When [Nesbitt] arrives in Shanghai, a top priority will be to tap in to local design talent."I'm interested in finding out what is happening in the Chinese design community and finding out the caliber of design education," he said, adding that he also planned to closely examine trends in Chinese industrial design outside of the automotive realm. We find it encouraging that an American corporate giant is having an ID'er, not a marketer or engineering guy, examine another culture's design trends with the hopes of incorporating local and relevant talent into the company's stable. It will also be interesting to see what a China-specific car designed by GM would look like, not to mention other non-car vehicles that the company may branch out into. The Times article goes on to point out thatOne of his roles, Mr. Nesbitt said, would be to present G.M. as a mobility company, not just a car company. G.M.'s display at the 2010 Shanghai World Expo of its futuristic, networked E-NV pods attracted a lot of attention. Such systems may have a future in China, he said.(more...)

frog Fact or Fiction: Wind Turbines VOTE TODAY!

Fact or Fiction is a new series of internal competitions happening within frog that utilizes their amazingly broad talent pool of 1600 people spread across 10 studios and 15 locations around the globe. A brief is sent to designers in multiple studios. Individual or groups of designers generate concepts and they are reviewed by a small team of frog's design leadership which includes Paul Bradley (Executive Creative Director of Industrial Design), Howard Nuk and our own Michael DiTullo (both Creative Directors) and then put to an internal vote for their top picks. Now this is where you come in: Core77 will be publishing the best concepts for you to help determine which ideas are more FACT than FICTION through a community-wide vote. The winning concept will be refined by frog's engineering concept and put through a technical feasibility evaluation, CAD simulation and possibly a proof of concept mockup to create a more realizable final design. For our inaugural Fact or Fiction entry, frog has chosen a pretty ambitious challenge. The energy industry has been going through dramatic change, and frog has been doing a lot of work there including a case study we recently published for ECOtality, and the Energy ThinkIn they hosted this year for the SGCC. The first Fact or Fiction series spins off frog's work in the energy sector...specifically wind energy. We think windmills are beautiful, but many proposed sites are often blocked due to aesthetics. Designers had to find innovative ways[..]
