A Challenging Etsy Sell: Giant-Size Bookcase + Reading Nook

For disseminating products, Ginkgo Studio selling their Greenwall plans on Etsy is one way to go; you sell PDFs of the plans electronically and outsource production to handy consumers. It seems like a good way to use Etsy, electricity, and local lumber sources, and if the popularity of the Greenwall takes off, you can have many of them made all around the world without having to ship a lot of boxes and emit a lot of carbon.(more...)

Our Gross Oversimplification of RISD's Origin Story: Formed With Leftover Partying Money!

To the comic book geek, few issues of their favorite superhero's stories will be more prized than the one containing their Origin Story, which illustrates the atypical circumstances leading to that character's superhero birth. Similarly we enjoy hearing that Apple was started in a garage, or that Dieter Rams applied for a job at Braun on a dare, or that Lincoln Logs were designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.Design schools have origin stories too, and one many of us may not be familiar with is that of the Rhode Island School of Design as documented by Dawn Barrett, their outgoing Architecture & Design Dean. Barrett is currently in the design world news for being the new President of the Massachusetts College of Art in Design, and she's also noted for her work on Infinite Radius: Founding Rhode Island School of Design an anthology of essays and archival materials concerning RISD's birth in the late 19th Century.(more...)

Pantone Somehow Manages to Will Another 175 Colors Into Existence

On any given design project, the color thing can be hard in one of two ways: Either the client is obsessed with it and the designer's not, or the designer feels each shade variant is life-or-death for the project and the client doesn't seem to get it.Depending on which side of the equation you're on, Pantone has just made your life easier or harder with their new Fashion + Home "color vocabulary," which contains 175 new hues within the set of 2,100 colors. It's enough to make already-beleaguered designers yearn for the kindergarten days of Roy G. Biv, when we only had seven choices. Or six, really; "Indigo" was always the redheaded stepchild in my crayon box. Er, indigo-headed. You know what I mean.(more...)

New Dieter Rams Book, This One Examining the Design Process, Coming Out on Friday

Two years ago we reviewed Less and More: The Design Ethos of Dieter Rams, the thus-far definitive work on the influential Braun designer's work. Now a new book on Rams is coming out, this one delving much further into the nitty-gritty of the industrial design process.Sophie Lovell and Klaus Kemp's As Little Design As Possible: The Work of Dieter Rams will not be released until Friday, but the Times' Alice Rawsthorn scored an advanced copy and has written a review indicating that the book casts a detailed eye on our largely unsung processes:Ms. Lovell's book shines by painting a refreshingly realistic picture of the design process. Books like this often depict designers as omnipotent heroes, but hers stresses the complex web of relationships they must navigate inside the design team and with other factions within a company. There are also gripping descriptions of the microscopic details that must be addressed to create products as accomplished as Mr. Rams's for Braun. Anyone who reads it probably won't look at a switch, edge or corner in quite the same way again.Something many of us will also be dying to read is the foreword written by none other than Jonathan Ive. Ive details his first childhood encounter with a Rams-designed object, recognizing it as something special and gaining an appreciation for design that has manifested into many of the objects we own today. As soon as the eBook version of As Little Design As Possible is released, I'll be reading it on an[..]

How to make money from a $3000 website

Advertise here with BSAI don’t believe that the $3000 client is the lost cause we often think they are. Case Study: Building a Better Bottle with Replenish, by Jason Foster

Five years ago I had an epiphany while I was ironing my shirt. I found myself wondering why it was that my ironing spray had to come in such a big bottle? Why couldn't it come with a concentrate I could dilute myself in one integrated bottle, not two separate containers? In fact, why didn't all of my household goods couldn't come in a more sensible, compact concentrate mixing system. The solution I saw in my mind was an integrated bottle built for mixing concentrates.Last April when I opened The New York Times to find the article "As Consumers Cut Spending, 'Green' Products Lose Allure" by Stephanie Clifford and Andrew Martin. The crux of the article was that consumers are not willing to pay more for 'green' products, especially in hard times. As a green products entrepreneur, I believe they shouldn't have to. Consumers can be green and save money, we just have to design better products so they can do both. Spurred on by my ironing epiphany I went digging in the patent universe to see what ideas were out there; I wanted to know if an integrated bottle system already existed. It didn't. I saw that Arm and Hammer had come out with an "Essentials" line in 2008 that consisted of an empty bottle with two packages of cleaner concentrate shrink wrapped to the bottle. Although its intentions were admirable, it did not offer the consumer the integrated approach to mixing concentrates and reducing packaging waste that I was thinking of. I knew then that I had to fundamentally rethink[..]

IDSA International Conference Roundtable with Tad Toulis and Clive Roux

With the 2011 IDSA International Conference coming up in September, Core77's Allan Chochinov sat down with Clive Roux, CEO of IDSA, and Tad Toulis, Conference Chair, to discuss the meeting, the mission, the members and the mandates of this year's get-together. Stay tuned to Core77 to find out more about this year's international gathering in New Orleans under the banner of Community.Allan Chochinov, Core77: Let's start with the theme of this year's conference, Community. This seems a good match for its location—New Orleans—but can you describe some of the ways you're planning on dovetailing design with community?Clive Roux, IDSA: Our goal with the IDSA International Conferences moving forward is to ensure that they reach the level of inspiration the profession (and those interested in design) really need. Last year IDSA ran the theme DIY, chaired by Sohrab Vossoughi of Ziba. DIY was an interesting and important theme that we all saw having an impact on the design profession. The feedback was positive; attendees said they found it inspiring and informative, corporate and consultant designer alike. But DIY represents just one possible direction for the future. In developing the theme for this year we aspired to develop a broader, more encompassing theme. We think that the broad context of Community and how that is enabling changes in the design profession meets the requirements for inspiration as well as relevance for a broader cross section of the design[..]
