Sofia Design Week 2011: Puma Creative Factory

During Sofia Design Week Puma is running a Creative Factory where everyone is invited to design their own jacket. The cut is always the same (available in different sizes) but the colors of the various pattern parts (seven in total) can be chosen individually. So, for the equivalent of about $25 (charged for the sewing), you can create a one-off sports jacket. A great idea housed in a nice location in the middle of Sofia—an apartment right on Shishman Street. Not only can you watch the production process of assembling your very own Puma jacket, but you can also recharge your batteries in a welcoming hangout after walking your feet off, looking at the festival. All the individual pieces are already pre-cut with a laser cutter. Two tailors at a time are working over the course of a ten hour day to produce all the jackets for the Puma Creative Factory visitors.(more...)

GM's Plexiglas Car from 1939

Here's a stunning piece of ID history: Back in the 1930s GM was working with chemical company Rohm & Haas on safety glass. As Rohm & Haas' manufacturing prowess with Plexiglas (which they had invented in 1933) became evident, a decision was made to skin a working car out of the stuff. According to RM Auctions,Visitors to General Motors' "Highways and Horizons" pavilion at the 1939-40 New York World's Fair came away awed by a vision of the future. The work of renowned designer Norman Bel Geddes, GM's "Futurama" exhibit foretold the communities and transportation systems of 1960, many of which came to pass.... [Also on display] was the "'Glass' Car - The first full-sized transparent car ever made in America."On the chassis of a 1939 Pontiac Deluxe Six...Rohm & Haas constructed an exact replica body using Plexiglas in place of the outer sheet-metal. The structural metal underneath was given a copper wash, and all hardware, including the dashboard, was chrome plated. Rubber moldings were made in white, as were the car's tires. It reportedly cost $25,000 to build—an astronomical figure in those days....(more...)

Project(ing) Aura: Bike Safety Lighting System, Revisited

"Blaze," a bicycle light concept by Emily Brooke, a product design student at the University of Brighton, has been getting some buzz in the cyclo-sphere lately. The handlebar-mounted laser projects a bright green virtual bike lane in front of a cyclist in order to increase visibility, especially in automobile blind spots. As of press time, this is the only image available. It illustrates the concept but leaves a lot to be desired...Brooke explains her thought process:I wanted to tackle the issue of safety of cyclists on city streets by increasing the visibility, footprint, and ultimately the awareness of the bicycle. Eighty per cent of cycle accidents occur when bicycles travel straight ahead and a vehicle manoeuvres into them. The most common contributory factor is 'failed to look properly' on the part of a vehicle driver. The evidence shows the bike simply is not seen on city streets.Even when lit up like a Christmas tree a bicycle in a bus's blind-spot is still invisible. With BLAZE, you see the bike before the cyclist and I believe this could really make a difference in the key scenarios threatening cyclists' lives on the roads. Many of the articles refer to Evan Gant and Alex Tee's "LightLane" concept (above), which projects a lane behind and to the sides of a cyclist (as opposed to in front of him or her). We got a first look at it when Gant and Tee entered it in a commuter cycling competition nearly two and a half years ago.For her part, Brooke's concept has earned her[..]

Reinier de Jong's New DEX Desk

About once a year Rotterdam-based architect/interior designer/furniture designer Reinier de Jong does a project that catches our eye, and we're happy to report that 2011 is no different. His new DEX, "made by skillful craftsmen who have heart for what they do," adds thin strips of lath to a drawer unit to make a very minimal desk:DEX is a refined, compact [and] minimalist desk that fits anywhere at home. The frame consists of two horizontal cross shapes of solid wooden laths and a drawer unit. The frame has a minimal presence round the seat for optimal comfort. The drawer unit has two or three drawers. They can be pulled out entirely to provide a place for a printer which one can control from the seat. The top is a panel of only 12 mm consisting of alternating layers of high pressure laminate and aluminium. These type of panels are usually applied in laboratory table tops. They are durable, easy to maintain and structurally very strong.(more...)
