Why typography is the Web’s greatest media format

Steampunk Meets Minimalism in Amazing "Rotary Mechanical" Smartphone Concept

In what is surely a preemptive response to Amid Moradganjeh's "Rimino" concept, New Zealand-based designer/photographer Richard Clarkson has developed a prototype of "Rotary Mechanical," a hypothetical smartphone design that is as much an art object as an exercise in form. Yet Clarkson's original point of departure is remarkably similar to Moradganjeh's endeavor to create "technology that is more integrated and more sensitive to the human experience.":The rotary mechanical smartphone is based on the idea of incorporating more feeling and life into our everyday digital objects. In modern times these objects have come to define us, but who and what defines these objects? Are we happy with generic rectangles of a touchscreen or do we want something with more tangibility, something with more life, something with more aura?Where Moradganjeh arrives at poster design as an analog means of communication, Clarkson arguably digs deeper, exploring the physical organ of UI:I have looked at where industrial design has come from, and where it might be going to, and by doing so have tried to create an object that is true to both, a harmonious combination of mechanical parts and digital technologies. Rotary mechanical is a question not only about the ever increasing 'digital take-over' of everything in our lives but also what is lost when this happens.(more...)

Procter & Gamble's Alternative to Clamshell Packaging Wins DuPont Packaging Award

There are stand-up comics who do entire routines about trying to get a clamshell package open, and a couple of months ago we Tweeted a link to Quora's "What is the worst piece of design ever done?" query, to which the most popular answer was Anita Schillhorn's answer:Plastic clamshell packaging. Design should help solve problems. This packaging attempts to solve the problem of theft, but creates new problems that are far worse, principally irritating your own customers. It's been the cause of thousands of emergency room visits, and there's even a Wikipedia-approved term to describe the frustration you feel when confronted with an unrelenting piece of plastic between you and your product: Wrap rage. It's no surprise that Procter & Gamble's Be Green Packaging was a Diamond Winner in the 23rd DuPont Packaging Awards.(more...)

Ke$ha likes the song she wrote for Britney Spears more than her own songs (8 photos)

Did you know that Ke$ha wrote “Till The World Ends” for Britney Spears? Vulture interviewed her and got the scoop. "I’ve never been more proud of anything in my career,” Ke$ha explained. “When I hear my own songs on the radio I have to kind of turn it down or change the radio or whatever,” she said. “When I hear that, I fucking blow the speakers out and I order everybody to dance.”The popular single sold over a million copies, so why did Ke$ha sell the song to Britney? Why didn’t she keep it for herself? She explained how much being a songwriter means to her, “It really solidifies me as a songwriter in the pop music world, which is what I consider myself first and foremost.”
