Coalesse at NeoCon 2011: Emilia Borgthorsdottir's "Sebastopol" Table Takes Gold

After spending the first half of her professional life as a physical therapist in her native Iceland, Emilia Borgthorsdottir made the transition to industrial design. Coalesse realized her first production piece, the "Sebastopol" table, on the occasion of NeoCon 2011, where her mix-n-match design took the Gold Award in its category. Read on as she talks us through her background and her latest work.Core77: So first things first, can you tell me about your background?Emilia Borgthorsdottir: I'm from Iceland. I've lived in the States for five years now and it's been two years since I graduated [with a B.S. in industrial design], so this is my first production piece.I understand you were a physical therapist before becoming a designer?Yes, yes back in the day. So I was working in a clinic as a physical therapist. Of course, ergonomics and biomechanics are always in my head— always have the body in mind. It's good to have that base of knowledge when you're designing because of course we're always designing for people. Even though it's packaging or whatever, it's always the interaction of the human body to a product. So I think it's very useful. That was back in Iceland?Yes, that was back in Iceland. And you moved to the States to pursue your degree in design?Yes... my husband was relocated, so that's why I thought I would use the opportunity to study. It takes four years to learn physical therapy, but on my third year, I thought why not pursue my passion for design and take[..]

Johnson Trading Gallery presents Max Lamb at Design Miami Basel

For Design Miami Basel this year—which runs through this weekend at Hall 5, Messe Basel—New York's Johnson Trading Gallery is pleased to present new work by furniture design wunderkind Max Lamb. The London-based designer is known for his unconventional techniques, such as sandcasting and carving polystyrene, and, at worst, his latest pieces are simply more of the same."China Granite Project II"—"field work" per the wall text—is the sequel to a series he developed on a grant in China in 2009. Lamb preserves as much of the raw material as possible, while the deliberate sections impart both a sense of design and artifice.(more...)

That's Gonna Leave a Mark: The Architectural Legacies of Corporations as IBM turns 100!

My first-ever job interview was with Clinique's package design division, located in the GM building in Manhattan. My ex-girlfriend worked at Sony in the AT&T building. An art director buddy of mine worked across the street from the Chrysler building. Core77's headquarters is located in the Singer building. There's so many architecturally-notable buildings we refer to by the corporate giants that erected them (even if said giants have long since vacated those buildings), which reminds us that there was a time when large corporations were practically expected to leave their mark on the world not just through their products, but through their architectural legacies.Network World examines this phenomenon with "IBM at 100: How Big Blue helped redefine corporate architecture," an article noting IBM's patronage of big-name designers of the past like Saarinen, the Eameses, van der Rohe, Noguchi, and Foster. It's a pretty fascinating read, particularly the anecdote in the second paragraph excerpted below:(more...)

Sofia Design Week 2011: Design Marketo: Lemonade for All!

Alex and Jerome, the duo behind London-based Design Marketo, behind their lemon bar.London-based Design Marketo orchestrated a great project for Sofia Design Week. This time their temporary hangout place and pop-up shop was all related to lemons, in particular lemonade. A variety of really nice design objects was on show, commissioned specifically for this event. My favorite object is Lemon Toys by Loris & Livia, a new interpretation of the classical wooden lemon squeezer, made from upcycled vintage and new wooden staircase parts. The Lemonatus mixing straw, designed by Julian Bond, allows you to enjoy a glass of "fresh-squeezed" lemonade instantaneously: One straw goes into the lemon, the other into a glass of water. Suck, and both liquids mix in the upper mixing chamber, et voila, you get your lemonade. It really works! One of the workshops that Design Marketo offered was about creating lemon bread.(more...)

ReadyMade Magazine Shuts Down

I've always hated corporate-speak, and here's why. This statement here—"Positioning [our company] for continued growth requires periodic realignment of resources, including how we deploy our workforce. These actions will enable us to devote additional resources to key strategic growth initiatives...."—uses two dozen words to say what basically amounts to "You're fired."Sadly ReadyMade Magazine, described by McNally-Jackson as "perhaps the most Brooklyn of magazines being published in Iowa," is being shut down. The DIY magazine founded by Shoshana Berger and Grace Hawthorne had a good ten-year run, but now parent publisher Meredith Corp. is pulling the plug with that announcement by the CEO in the paragraph above.I tried to click over to the ReadyMade website to read the farewell message from the editorial team, but at press time the site was no longer functional (possibly from being overwhelmed by visitors!). Here's an excerpt pulled by Mother Nature blogger Matt Hickman:(more...)

This isn’t Lady Gaga but her outfit shows that it should be (3 photos)

Device Design Day 2011: Six Questions for Branko Lukic

In anticipation of Device Design Day 2011, we've partnered with Kicker Studio to bring you a series where speakers from this year's conference reflect on six questions about design and their practice. D3 brings together visual, interaction and industrial designers for a multi-disciplinary conversation about the design of consumer electronics and objects with embedded technology. We're excited about kicking off the Six Questions series with Core77 friend and Design Awards jury captain for Specultaive Objects, Branko Lukic. Branko Lukic is founder and Principal of NONOBJECT Studio. He is an entrepreneur and master of new experiences, and author of NONOBJECT, a design and innovation book that explores the future of product experiences. Read on to find out a little more about why Lukic loves spaghetti and violins, and the importance of your "inner Google."Device Design DayFriday, August 5, 20119:30 AM - 5:30 PMKicker Studio: What is the most cherished product in your life? Why?Branko Lukic: Actually I don't have a particular most cherished product—I like too many and for different reasons. I like a range of products, from the tangible to the intangible, with a particular appreciation for movies and video games. What's the one product you wish you'd designed, and why? That product is still to come. But if you asked me which products I wish I had designed in the past, I'd name two:The violin - It is perfect, it has no expiration date and it brings light to peoples' souls. It is[..]
