Clever Designs from Catherine Werdel

I'm highly impressed by the number of well-thought-out concepts on Hamburg-based designer Catherine Werdel's site. Her slotted toothbrush not only provides a place for it to rest when not in use, but helps you get that last drop of "Ooo-med:"A project she did for Brita takes into account that many of us apartment-dwellers have tiny sinks that make it impossible to vertically fill their containers:(more...)

How Do You Distinguish One Black Rectangle from Another?

A tablet computer provides a particular challenge for the design team producing it, since it's not like you can make it a funky shape to set it apart from the competition; instead the user experience is what will set the product apart.I'm happy with the iPad user experience and grateful that Apple did it, not only because it's good on its own merits, but because it will inspire the competition to attempt to design a better user experience. So I've been going through the promo videos of HP's TouchPad (conveniently compiled here into a single list by ars technica) to see what they're up to.The introductory video is pretty par-for-the-course, until you get to 2:20. Skip forward and check out their phone call and "Touch to Share" features:Here's a closer look at those latter two features. I'd love to have devices that did this, as I'm constantly e-mailing things from one of my devices to another (maps and directions, for instance):(more...)

Jean Prouvé's In-House Focus Group

The 20th-century French designer Jean Prouvé was an early supercreative, a metal worker who taught himself architecture and design. In the early 1920s, when he himself was in his early 20s, he formed the first of a string of workshops, the best-known of which was his eponymous atelier opened in 1931. In the 1940s he was studying aluminum, building sheds out of it and sending them to Africa. In the 1950s he developed the Maison Tropicale, the first flatpack house, designed to be shipped to tropical climates. In a fascinating article, Vitra Magazine interviews Prouvé's daughter Catherine, who reveals the designer's unusual test group for his designs: His family.(more...)

Things That Look Like Other Things: "Symbiosis" Lamp by Rafael Morgan

Seeing as Gizmodo took Kawamura Ganjavian's "Ostrich" pillow concept and ran with it, I had some reservations about posting Rafael Morgan's "Symbiosis" lamp. But we're all adults here, and I think it's worth sharing Morgan's interesting, if suggestive, symbiotic design as a riff on recycled wine bottle candle holders. The Symbiosis lamp has an internal spring action mechanism that allows it to functionally adapt to most kinds of cylindrical recipients and objects. Covered by an elastic fabric cap, it also adapts aesthetically to those objects, creating a relationship between them. Two objects working as one. One cannot exist without the other. A design relationship with endless possibilities.(more...)

A Peek Inside the Never-Before-Seen Archive of Dieter Rams

We've been eagerly awaiting Sophie Lovell's new book Dieter Rams: As Little Design as Possible and today, Phaidon released a sneak peek at what the book has in store for us! For the project, photographer Florian Böhm was invited to document the Braun Archive and the house of Dieter Rams in Kronberg, Germany. His images provide a fascinating peek at the previously unseen world of Dieter Rams. There have been several books about Rams' work and impact in recent years (including the Klaus Kemp's Less and More which we reviewed in 2009), but what sets this weighty, almost 400-page tome apart is that Lovell spent three years with Mr. Rams writing the book. Sophie painstakingly helped to catalog decades of Dieter's work, and in the process, recorded his thoughts on everything from aesthetics in general to what makes a good designer. Each of his pieces is documented in chronological order, and fantastic photos are aplenty with details of product, rare images of prototypes, models and sketches, as well as shots of Ram's workshop and studio. The forward is written by Apple Senior Vice President of Design, Jonathan Ive, and the back of the book features interviews from 6 of today's most influential designers: Jonathan Ive, Naoto Fukasawa, Jasper Morrison, Sam Hecht, Konstantin Grcic, and Core77 friend and contributor / frog creative director, Michael DiTullo. Stay tuned for our more in-depth review and coverage of Dieter Rams: As Little Design as Possible and check out more[..]
