Using Electromagnetism to Transform from Desktop Illumination to Romantic Mood

Korean designer Hyungwoo Uhm's "GEO Magnetic" is a retrofuturistic desk lamp that draws on electromagnetism for its functionality, "drastically excluding digital-styled switches and high-technological decorative elements." Instead, a thin loop of rail both powers and supports the circular head when "GEO Magnetic" is in desk lamp mode. Moreover, the arm doubles as a kind of rollercoaster track to elicit a more intimate ambiance: "The core of this design is that this desk lamp can fulfill two different functions. At ordinary times, it is used as an illuminator that is changeable in height with the head lamp lifted to the top along the rail." However, if you lower the head along the rail down to the base, which is the same shape and size, "light is emitted from the parting line and then this lamp can also be used as an indirect lighting for romantic mood."If that's not enough to increase your heart rate, perhaps some magnetic-induced levitation will do the trick (or flip the switch, as it were):The ball-shaped switch is attached to the very fine thread, so that it gives an [illusion] that it's suspended to the air. As the electric current flowing into each sections varies in intensity, the current allows the spherical switch to shift its position to on / off and three different levels, which makes people adjust the intensity of illumination.(more...)

Sofia Design Week 2011: El Turco Digital deflowers the Apartment, "Balkan Design is Still Virgin"

A presentation of flea market treasures as part of the quest to identify Balkan design.El Turco Digital is a fresh creative company based in Istanbul, Turkey that develops and creates digital ideas (viral campains, online documentaries, etc.). The collective explains that they're "analogue people in a digital world, bringing zeros+ones and textures close together."One of the many details exposed in the Apartament during the "Balkan Design Wedding"—the Turkish lucky eye or "nazar," a charm that is meant to protect against the "evil eye."For Sofia Design Week, the team relocated their creative base to the Apartament—literally working out of an apartment that has served, for several decades, as a very popular hang out place for the creative minds in Sofia. A follow-up to last year's project, "Balkan Design is Still Virgin," sets out on "a quest to identify Balkan design."One of the rooms of the Apartament.Apart from many discussions and the presentations of ETD's findings of what they found on their quest to identify Balkan design, the main installation in the Apartament was a staged wedding party—with hopes to finally "deflower" Balkan design. As the invite proclaimed, "We marry tradition off to innovation!" Check out more images of the party after the jump as well as an awesome video for the project!(more...)

Game Design: If Bobby Fischer Had a Drinking Problem

The Shot Glass Checkers Set—as its title implies—is actually for checkers, but as the title of this post implies, I couldn't think of any famous checkers players. The concept could be adapted to chess with some creative glassblowing, though the greater brainpower requirements of that game might not jive with the spirits. After losing (and slamming) three pawns and a rook, I'd probably be trying to move my knight like a queen.Still, it would be kind of awesome to watch a Great Masters of Chess tournament where the players are struggling to checkmate before they puke. What we'd like to see next: Connect 4 with quaaludes. Raising the Barcode for UPC Design

Just yesterday I tweeted about the Hedera Winery package design, above, that nicely blends the QR code into the label. And the WSJ has just run a piece about design companies doing the same with the lowly bar code, which I'm always surprised hasn't been phased out yet. Consumer-goods companies hope these vanity barcodes will better connect with customers...The trend is popular with smaller companies, and even one of the world's largest food companies, Nestle SA, is trying out vanity barcodes on its smaller brands....A handful of companies that specialize in making vanity barcodes have cropped up in recent years, though some companies create them in-house.Leading the charge in Asia is Japan's Design Barcode firm, while Jersey-based Vanity Barcodes has the 'States covered. Both have dozens of silly but fun barcode designs to click through at their respective links. You may be surprised to learn that the barcode was conceived of back in 1948 by two grad students and was reportedly inspired by Morse code. (I was kind of hoping it was inspired by zebras.) It didn't see commercial uptake until the 1970s, when supermarket executive Alan Haberman used his professional juice to enforce widespread adoption.Sadly, Haberman passed away just last week.(more...)

JLo can’t make up her mind (8 photos)

It is still up in the air as to whether Jennifer Lopez will be returning to ‘American Idol.’ We now know why this decision has not been made. JLo wants to return to acting! Deadline reported that she might star in not one, but two feature films. There has been talk that she might play alongside Jason Statham in ‘Parker’ – an adaptation of the Donald E. Westlake mystery series. No matter what, production on the film begins in August. She is also eyeing a secondary role in 'What to Expect When You’re Expecting,’ which includes Cameron Diaz and Matthew Morrison. So many decisions… what a nice predicament to have.

Lytro's "Light Field" Camera Adds Fabled Third Dimension to Photography

Well, almost: Lytro, a Silicon Valley startup, has been getting quite a bit of buzz for its new "light field" camera, which allows photographers to manipulate the focal length for any given image after the photo has been taken. While the technology has existed since the mid-90's, Dr. Ren Ng has taken his lauded dissertation research from the hallowed grounds of Stanford to nearby Mountain Valley, where he's managed to adapt the imaging technique—"light field" once meant some 100 cameras in a room— for consumer use under the Lytro moniker. And what, exactly, is a "light field," anyway? The short description is that it captures every ray of light, deflecting off every object at every angle, in any given image. Where traditional camera lenses "simply add up all the light rays and record them as a single amount of light," the "light field sensor captures the color, intensity and vector direction of the rays of light."The light field is a core concept in imaging science, representing fundamentally more powerful data than in regular photographs. The light field fully defines how a scene appears. It is the amount of light traveling in every direction through every point in space—it's all the light rays in a scene. Conventional cameras cannot record the light field.via Ng's dissertation (PDF)(more...)
