Bicycle Film Festival Recap

It's kind of hard to believe that the Bicycle Film Festival has been around for over a decade now, parallel to the explosion of the contemporary cycling vogue. In fact, founding director Brendt Barbur expressed mixed feelings about the increased profile of the event, which started as a DIY pet project back in 2001, though he's always happy to see more riders on the streets.via Blue Lug, who were in town from Tokyo before heading up to Geekhouse HQ to get fittedAnyway, the series of screenings and events added a bit of structure to my weekend, and between the "flagship" program, which included the world premiere of "Racing Towards Red Hook," and the street fest, I think it went pretty well.via John Watson / Prolly Is Not ProbablyIn addition to catching up with Thomas from Horse Cycles and Jeff from Continuum (not to be confused with the design consultancy), I also had the pleasure of meeting Matt Finkle of "I Love My Bike," one of Marty's picks for our summer gift guide (the book, not the person)... just a few of the many friendly faces on the urban bike event circuit.Still, it is a film festival after all, and one of the film highlights turned out to be particularly relevant: "D'Acciaio" ("Of Steel") spoke to the notion of craftsmanship as a cultural value. The short documentary about the highly quotable Italian framebuilder Dario Pegoretti is viewable in full online; watch it after the jump:(more...)

Becoming an Antarctican: Tabula Rasa Team Building, by Arturo Pelayo

This is the second post in a series that shares design learnings from an expedition I took to Antarctica. The first post was a reflection of my initial thoughts upon arriving to the edge of a known world to embark towards the "new world" of Antarctica. The first lesson of the journey was to "Let Go." In this post, I focus on the challenges of starting with a clean slate. In my short 28 years, I have observed that designers, by nature, explore new ways of thinking and offer solutions to human interactions. It is an iterative process and highly collaborative.During three days of orientation for the 2011 Inspire Antarctica Expedition in Ushuaia, Argentina, I was able to grasp new team dynamics and how relationships were forged in a very short span of time. The distance between the tip of the Antarctic Peninsula and the tip of the American Continent, known as the Drake Passage, is roughly 600 miles. While it may seem quite large, it is a very tiny space for the entire Pacific and Atlantic Ocean to meet. The seas are very rough here and conditions change by the hour.Going through the Drake Passage was similar to how I was taught to approach projects: come in with a fresh eye but bring your experience along. This is quite tricky to manage in real life. Approaching the expedition with a designer's mind of collaboration was challenging: In Antarctica my new best friends—and teammates for 14 days—were people who, 48 hours earlier, I didn't know.A basic premise is that we[..]

Everything is a Remix: Does Innovation stem from Copying?

If you haven't been following Kirby Ferguson's video thesis, Everything is a Remix, his most recent entry on the elements of creativity is a great place to start. Part 3 of a 4-part series, Ferguson posits that true innovation starts from a foundation of copying, then transformative "tinkering" to combining multiple elements for the true creative breakthrough. As designers and creators, what are your thoughts on this? Is everything truly a remix? [Watch Part 1: Music and Part 2: Films after the jump!]Everything is a Remix Part 3 from Kirby Ferguson on Vimeo.(more...)

Salvage + Monochrome Mash-Up Furniture by Brooklyn's 31 & Change

31 & Change is a Brooklyn-based furniture venture that specializes in funky updates on otherwise understated American hardwoods, often in combination with found or vintage elements. According to founder Kurt Lenard (whose background in graphic design informs the work), "31 & Change represents not only a date and age, but a reflection of moments that define us."In particular, the Greene Ave bench caught my eye—partially because the thumbnail is in prime real estate towards the top of the page), but also because I live a couple blocks away from its namesake street. Oh, and the design ain't bad either:Bastard chairs are a dime a dozen and we tend to cast them off into purgatory all too often. The Greene Ave. collection is a project that rescues these orphan chairs and upcycles them into a one-of-a-kind bench for your entranceway, dining table or backyard patio. Each bench uses three contrasting chairs from different eras to form a new contemporary piece. All benches range in size, shape and color.(more...)

Dwell on Design 2011: 550 Sq Ft of Ecofabulous Living

Reporting by Carren JaoNow in its third year designing the show house, Ecofabulous has once again proved that living conscientiously doesn't mean sacrificing taste or comfort. This year, Ecofabulous founder Zem Joaquin teamed up with Los Angeles-based Jonathan Davis of pieceHomes, pre-fab green modular houses, to design an eco-friendly home that was less bohemian cottage-chic than modern-clean. "It's very soft, livable, warm and gorgeous," says Joaquin. True enough, in 550 square feet, the home feels much larger than its footprint thanks to clerestory windows and varying ceiling heights. The home has a long linear plan that flows from kitchen to living room, bedroom to bath. (more...)

Core77 Design Awards: Meet the Jury - Jens Martin Skibsted of KiBiSi

The weather outside is beautiful, but we're as busy as ever here at Core: in addition to the newly-launched Coroflot Genius Gallery and the Summer Gift Guide, we're finally seeing the finish line for the First Annual Core77 Design Awards. We're scheduling the live jury announcements throughout the middle of July, but in the meantime, we've got some great behind-the-scenes content for your viewing pleasure. Earlier this week, shared the process that went into the identity for the awards; today, we're pleased to present a more in-depth look at one of our jury teams as they share their thoughts on the challenges at hand.L to R: Lars Holme Larsen, Bjarke Ingels, Jens Martin SkibstedWhile Lars Holme Larsen was the head of the Transportation Jury, his colleague and collaborator Jens Martin Skibsted certainly had a fair share of input as one of the jury members: he's been designing award-winning transportation solutions for over decade. Along with rising starchitect Bjarke Ingels, the three Danish designers comprise the design überfirm KiBiSi. We had a chance to pick Skibsted's brain about urban mobility and why it matters more today than ever before.KiBiSi portfolioCore77: KiBiSi certainly constitutes a high-profile "dream team" of Danish designers. Can you comment on the similarities and differences between the collaborative platform and your independent consultancy? Or is it a truly synergistic partnership? Jens Martin Skibsted: KiBiSi has evolved from a loose constellation[..]
