Bethany Shorb's Modern Devotion to the Car Crash

Artist Bethany Shorb has been experimenting with car crash themed work since a car crash almost ended her own life three years ago. The Detroit-based industrial designer has been harvesting parts from classic American and European sports car, creating beaded and sutured "skins" from deployed airbags and reappropriating "obsessive tropes" on car-culture. Tonight, her solo show, Supplemental Restraint System is opening at Brooklyn's Devotion Gallery. A Brief History of Kitchen Design, Part 6: Poggenpohl Transforms the Kitchen from Workshop-like to Hospital-like

Friedemir Poggenpohl passed away in 1924, but thankfully he left behind a capable design and production staff that would continue to push the envelope. In 1928, one year before Austrian architect Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky essentially invented the galley kitchen, Poggenpohl's company introduced the "Reform Kitchen," seen above. It's not yet a complete kitchen like Lihotzky's Frankfurt Kitchen, but the interconnected cabinet modules, polished white lacquer and Modernist aesthetic were eerily prescient.(more...)

Insights from Eastman Innovation Lab: Back to the Future with Richard Seymour and JohnPaul Kusz

In case you missed it, Eastman Innovation has been steadily releasing stories with Richard Seymour (seymourpowell) through their Design Insights video series. The designer and futurist Richard Seymour talks about everything from "industrial judo" to why the anatomy of a chicken inspired one of his favorite projects, designing a bra. In Seymour's last story for his Into the Future video series, he and JohnPaul Kusz, a leading authority on sustainability and design issues, discuss the importance of young designers being familiar with the stories of H.G. Wells, Jules Verne and other science fiction writers."I look to the work of writers to inspire me a lot," says Seymour, cofounder of Seymourpowell, a leading design and innovation firm based in London, England. "If I'm dried up somewhere, I'll go off and read something that's impossible and see if you can make it work."Check out the stories about "making the impossible, possible" after the jump or watch Seymour's whole Into the Future series here.(more...)

Things That Look Like Other Things: A Light to Drink Your Beer By

Young British Designer Thomas Stanley has come up with the ultimate upcycled dorm room accessory: "Lightin," a beer can reimagined as a desk lamp that casts a warm, intoxicating glow from its underside.Ok, so there's a little more to it than that:"Lightin" is an eco-friendly desk lamp, which houses a bulb capable of lasting 50,000 hours or the equivalent of 20+ halogen bulbs. It is made largely from recycled/re-used materials, a re-used aluminium drinks tin being the focal point and the housing for an LED spotlight bulb, which if left on permanently would last an incredible 5.7 years. Extra emphasis is given to the drinks tin with a subtle, elegant wire bent frame supporting it.(more...)

A Brief History of Kitchen Design, Part 5: Poggenpohl's Early Influence, 1892-1923

We see how Taylor's Scientific Management principles affected Catharine Beecher and her Ladies' Home Journal columns, and the inspiration those provided for Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky's Frankfurt Kitchen, a chain of events stretching from the late 1800s to the 1920s. With parallel timing, separate developments in kitchen design were also being advanced by a German company called Poggenpohl, which is still, today, a thriving kitchen manufacturer and the oldest in the world. In 1892, a 33-year-old cabinet maker named Friedemir Poggenpohl opened his own workshop and an adjoining furniture store in Bielefeld, Germany, focusing on kitchen cabinetry. Uniquely, he produced kitchen cabinets not only in wood, but in a white lacquered finish. (Various websites also cite that Poggenpohl was focused on ergonomics and produced "storage innovations," though no one lists concrete examples of what they were.)What Poggenpohl accomplished that Taylor, Beecher and Schütte-Lihotzky—despite their greatness—did not, was to set up an enduring company in his own name that would continue to advance kitchen design long after his death. Device Design Day 2011: Six Questions for Liz Bacon

In anticipation of Device Design Day 2011, we've partnered with Kicker Studio to bring you a series where speakers from this year's conference reflect on six questions about design and their practice. D3 brings together visual, interaction and industrial designers for a multi-disciplinary conversation about the design of consumer electronics and objects with embedded technology.Leading up to August 5th's Device Design Day in San Francisco, we'll be learning more about this year's speakers through a short series of six questions from Kicker Studio. This week we sit down with interaction designer and Porsche-racing speed demon Elizabeth Bacon. Read on to learn about quite possibly the coolest pen in the world, the thrill of motocross and why designers should always remember: Only you can make yourself happy.Elizabeth Bacon is a practicing interaction designer with over 12 years of professional experience. She began her career at Cooper, where she got her "post-grad" education in interaction design while working across a variety of domains. She then was a "Human Factors Design Engineer" for over five years in the Cardiac Rhythm Management Division of St. Jude Medical, a Fortune 100 company. She designed multiple products around the clinical systems that handle implanted pacemakers and defibrillators, and formalized a process that blended interaction design methods with traditional human factors engineering approaches. Liz has been running her own design consultancy, Devise, for[..]
