Peter Saville on How "Autobahn" Changed His Life

As I mentioned in yesterday's recap of the "Avant/Garde Diaries" launch event, Peter Saville mentioned that the album art for Kraftwerk's 1974 LP Autobahn was the singular inspiration for his decision to pursue graphic design—a sound decision, considering that his artwork for the likes of Joy Division and New Order has perhaps eclipsed that of their krautrock predecessor. In fact, Autobahn was the first record that he bought with his own money—until that point in his teenage years, he simply borrowed tunes from his older brothers. The überminimal design gave Saville his first taste of semiotics as an underlying issue in visual communication. To hear him tell it, the abstracted highway represents "time, history [and] travel" even as it resembles everything from a "power station [to a] cathedral." Saville also noted that the ideograph's deeper meaning in terms of "history as well as space," where it has taken on a cultural significance in addition to its graphic one.Any other graphic designers care to share their "Eureka" moments in the comments?Peter Saville is a British art director from Manchester, best known for his album covers for Joy Division, OMD, New Order and other bands signed with the Factory Records label. His work—for instance the legendary cover for the New Order single Blue Monday in the form of an 8-inch floppy disk or the cover for the Joy Division album Unknown Pleasures—stands out with its quintessential, minimalist style. Why is the E-Type's 50-Year-Old Design Still So Good?

If you ever run into someone that's a better-looking version of a person you had a crush on in high school, you can't help but be enthralled. Similarly, I'll always do a double take when I see a Jaguar E-Type, as my first car was a used Datsun 280ZX (not the exact one in the photo, alas), whose predecessor 240Z owes a widely-acknowledged styling debt to the E-Type.I'm not the only one who finds the car attractive, of course; the E-Type is one of the few vehicles in the MoMA's permanent collection. We wrote a more descriptive piece up on the E-Type last year, and here's a video of Paola Antonelli discussing the car's ellipse- and algorithm-based design in depth.Popular Mechanics recently asked four car experts—Ford's J Mays, Chrysler's Ralph Gilles, Tesla Chief Designer Franz von Holzhausen and walking car history encyclopedia Jay Leno—what it is that makes the car so special. Read their answers and see some beauty shots here.(more...)

Two Years Late, But Finally, Two Screens

We'd first heard about gScreen's dual-screen laptop two years ago, when it was supposed to come out. Well, better late than never: Here it is 2011 and the company's finally ready to take orders. Er, pre-orders.I was just talking with Core77's Managing Editor, LinYee, about how we've both become too accustomed to the extra productivity enabled by a dual-monitor desktop set-up to go back to a single screen. And now you can have two 17-inch monitors in one laptop. Of course, you don't really buy one of these for the productivity gain; you buy it to annoy the crap out of the guy sitting next to you on the airplane. Hey 15-B, hope you don't mind if I—well, we—watch some Jackass 3.(more...)

Sketchnotes of SANAA at the Art Institute of Chicago

A few weeks ago the Pritzker-prize winning Japanese architecture duo SANAA gave a lecture to a packed house at the Art Institute of Chicago. Most famous in the US for their design of the New Museum in New York City, they shared 9 additional projects from their impressive portfolio—both built and in-progress—and shared renderings, sketches, models, and construction photos from each one. Since their Wikipedia entry has more information on them then their own website, it goes without saying that they their point-of-view tends to be that of understatement. As they shared their work, it became quite apparent quickly that SANAA doesn’t so much employ a signature style, but common experiential qualities that link their projects together—qualities of light, transparency, and openness. As part of the Core77 Sketchnotes Channel, I’m presenting my personal sketchnotes from the lecture to briefly analyze how I approached making them. Since the lecture was primarily visual, I spent the majority of my time soaking in the projected photos and chose not to bury my head in my book. How often do you get to experience architectural photos on a 60 foot wide projection screen? Since I decided to work this way, the notes I captured tended to try to create iconic representations of each building, capture the basic information, and any notable details or interesting quotes. In the age of Google Images, its much more important to me that these sketchnotes can cover what[..]
