Mission R Electric Superbike at the MotoGP

Don't miss the opportunity to see Core77 Design Award Transportation Winner, Mission R race their electric superbike this weekend at the MotoGP Red Bull US Grand Prix out at Laguna Seca. Designed by Timothy Prentice of Motonium Design with James Parker on the chassis design and engineering, Steve Rapp will be riding the Mission R in its racing debut. The heart of the Mission R is an advanced MissionEVT powertrain that packs 141hp and 14.4 kWh of energy storage in a package smaller than a 600cc sportbike. The liquid-cooled AC Induction motor produces 115 ft. lbs. of torque the moment the rider cracks the throttle, rocketing the bike from a standstill to over 160 mph in one gear. Power is managed by the MissionEVT 100kW motor controller, with customizable regenerative braking maps, throttle maps and more. All vehicle and ride data is accessible via WiFi or 3G connections.Learn more about the Mission R at Core77DesignAwards.com!(more...)

Future Thinking from the Past: Pneumatic Tube Transport Systems

You know the systems—the tubes that shoot canisters full of receipts cash deposits and the occasional safety pop back and forth from the teller in those drive-through banking transactions. Pneumatic tubes are not a new idea—according to io9's awesome brief history of pneumatic tube transport systems, the earliest recorded experiments with vacuum were conducted by an Arab philosopher named Al-Farabi in the 9th century AD. But the best thing about the article is an in-depth breakdown of inventor Alfred Ely Beach's prototypes for mass transit. He is best known for his invention of New York City's first concept for a subway: the Beach Pneumatic Transit and also happened to be the publisher of Scientific American. Follow along as Beach goes from idea (an op-ed piece published in 1849 for an underground subway powered by horse-drawn carriages) to prototyping his first pneumatic concept for the 1867 American Institute Fair to his final masterpiece, opened in February 1870:Beach unveiled his masterpiece, and it was an immediate novelty attraction for the public, especially given the luxury of the station: it boasted a grand piano, chandeliers, and a fully operational fountain stocked with goldfish. He charged 25 cents for a block long ride, and fought for the next three years to get a construction permit to extend the line uptown all the way to Central Park. Read the full article for a more detailed history of pneumatic transport (including 34-miles of Prague's pneumatic[..]

Video Proof of Some Serious Advances in Auto Safety

I think this car is a Nissan 300Z, and I have to say to the designers and engineers who toiled away on the safety features of this car, you guys are freaking amazing. This video is being circulated with lots of jokes about the parking prowess of the driver. Watch it and be amazed as he gets out and appears to be fine.If you did this in any car made before 1990, you'd be well-dead.Motorheads out there who peg the car for a different model, please let us know in the comments. Whomever designed and engineered this car needs to see this video.(more...)

Would You Kickstart a Bench? Orange22's Dario Antonioni Wants to Know...

Designer, entrepreneur and Core77 Design Awards Runner-Up Dario Antonioni of L.A.-based design firm Orange22 recently launched a Kickstarter campaign to produce a bench called "Botanist Minimal," an extension of the established Botanist series (itself a spinoff of Orange22).Of course, there's more to it than meets the eye:The minimalistic design is based on a reduction based design process where we examined a typical bench and rigorously reduced it into its essential elements. In the case of Botanist Minimal, only two basic components are meaningful to produce a functional bench. Those components are 1) a bent wood top which transitions into the structural legs and 2) a center rib for additional stability and rigidity. The end result is beautiful with the two basic elements working harmoniously together. It's certainly an elegant piece of design work—I'd sit on it and even consider putting it in my home—and I agree that "designing something that's minimal doesn't make it easy to manufacture," but why use Kickstarter? Dario makes his case after the jump...(more...)
