Guerilla Gardening: Suck UK's "Throw & Grow" Flower Grenades

Years ago Theme Magazine did an article on Namaiki, a Tokyo-based design duo advocating guerilla gardening. They'd basically drop "seed bombs" in empty urban lots, roadside tree plots, anywhere there's dirt, and let nature do the rest. Thus you'd have broccoli, radishes and even pumpkins growing in the unlikeliest of places. Suck UK's contribution to the guerilla gardening movement is the Flower Grenade, loaded up with Buttercup, Poppy and Ryegrass seeds. Toss these over the fence into an abandoned lot and the clay shells will dissolve next time it rains. And hopefully, a week later you'll peek through the fence and see the beginnings of new life.(more...)

Looks Cool... But What Does It Actually Do? "Objets d'un Autre Age" Contextualize the Touchscreen

From time to time, my first reaction to images of an object is to wonder what it does, typically when the form is so compelling as to belie its purpose or deeper meaning. French designer Eva Rielland's project "Objets d'un Autre Âge" fit the bill in that they almost seem too elegant to use, despite their intrinsically tactile design philosophy (though it might find a counterpart in Sébastian Cluzel's "Culinary Landscape", which share the minimal aesthetic). In short, Rielland's "Objects" are intended to elucidate the myriad functionality of the touchscreen (the conceptual opposite of Patrick Stevenson-Keating's futurecasting "Quantum Parallelograph." Instead, they highlight specific uses of tablets by adding an element of analogy to tablet design."Objects of Another Age" [is a rethinking of] high tech tools to make them easily understood by all, and particularly by the elderly. To reduce learning curve anxiety and the risk of errors, object design is based on observation of real world habits and needs; a clear and obvious gesture for each object minimizes the use of a GUI.They work as a system of objects. Eva Rielland chose to focus on communications features from the world of computers: write, view, upload images, print. Each object does one of these functions. There is the frame (used for video chat), the mailbox (just to exchange e-mails), printer and finally, the visual (that presents an image received by e-mail). The clear separation of each of these[..]

IDEO Labs Exquisite Corpse: The story that never ends

Visual of key word and words that were not searchedWith roots in the surrealist movement, IDEO Boston put together a digital experiment in storytelling at an event with Bill Moggridge. Using twitter-length sentences culled from the attendees, IDEO linked keywords from the sentences with sourced images through Flickr of the latest corresponding tagged photos posted to the site. The end result: A never-ending visual story. Check out the ever-changing site or see a static version of the first chapter after the jump.Explains the team from IDEO:In creating our exquisite corpse, each step of the process challenged our grasp on what makes a story "complete". We considered:+ The collective influence of a particular crowd: Submissions came from people with a common interest (they wanted to attend an event hosted by Bill Moggridge). Did that influence the tone/stream of the final corpse's consciousness?+ The power of curation: We wondered what effect curating has on crowd-sourced content. It seems that contributions solicited for a specific purpose encourage a level of similarity and richness—such as multiple perspectives on the single topic—whereas undirected, open-ended contributions lead to more free-form ideas.+ The impact of crowd sourcing: The project left us wondering how we might use crowd-sourced visualizations in traditional stories and whether given writers exquisite direction can produce a coherent story through this model. Does the expression need to be[..]

Citibank's New ATM Depositing Routine: A Small Thing to Some, a Vast Improvement to Me

Good product design ideas once came in the form of simple, discrete objects. You would invent, say, a hammer with a claw on one side to remove nails, or one of those apple-peeling contraptions, or a piece of material that you'd place around a bare lightbulb to shield your eyes from the glare. And those objects provided an experience superior to what came before them—carrying a second nail-pulling tool, peeling an apple with your fingernails, squinting to avoid glare.Increasingly our better experiences aren't coming from new, simple objects, but the interconnectedness of technology. The iPod is a single object, yes, but it's really a perfect storm of things—plastic molding, metalworking, hard drive storage, software, a small LCD, interface design—that was wrangled into a rectangle. All of those things except the interface design and exact form factor existed independently for years, but it was that masterful blending, coupled to the interface, that made it a hit.(more...)

Rachael Taylor promotes the new Charlie’s Angels TV series in Vogue Australia (5 photos)

The 27-year-old Aussie Rachael Taylor shows off her beauty in Vogue Australia while explaining her role in the "Charlie's Angels" reboot. Drew Barrymore, known for being a Charlie's Angel herself, is the executive producer for the new series. Taylor talks about Barrymore's producing techniques:“I like her schtick, she comes off as really fun and she’s really sweet and very nurturing, but she’s tough as. She’s a very clever lady: she knows what her audience is and she knows how to deliver.” She continued, “The fight-or-flight mechanism… I’m flight, which is perfect for my character, really, because she’s fast. But in the end, there was enormous pay-off with learning how to handle myself. I mean, look at my wrists. I’m quite agile but I’m not strong. I must have looked ridiculous. As a matter of fact, Drew Barrymore told me I looked ridiculous.”

MoMA's Unsung Design Heroes

The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in NYC—home to the recently-opened design exhibition "Talk to Me"—needs no introduction to any art or design enthusiast. Their in-house Department of Advertising and Graphic Design, on the other hand, is almost entirely invisible, yet they deserve just as much recognition. From life-sized typography to murals on apartment buildings, and from exhibit design to limited-edition newspapers, the Department is a powerhouse at delivering art to patrons in the form of an exquisitely wrapped gift. There is certainly an art to maintaining a balance between drawing visitors into a museum, keeping their attention, and providing information, while disappearing behind the actual exhibit—the work itself—when need be. To this end, the majority of the Department's design work for the entrances to MoMA's exhibits is bombastic and hard to miss. What I find interesting, though, is how one best leads a patron through an exhibit (whether through psychology, design, or both) while keeping the art on display and the conversation it has with its visitors the most important part of the experience.(more...)
