Flotspotting: Cigarette Labels Not Safe for Work... or Any Other Public Place

I'm not going to pretend that Anna Astvatsatryan's "Offensive Habit" series of cigarette labels are mind-blowing graphics or design work by any means... but suffice it to say that they caught my eye.Where Erik Askin's inspired diamond pack concept aims at a sort of physical resistance, Astvatsatryan's mercilessly shame-inducing copy focus on social stigma:Smoking kills me, my lungs, my heart, my unborn child, my friends, my lovers, my non-existent erection. Why would I quit smoking? I just don't like what's written on my pack of cigarettes.Again, they're blunt enough to earn a NSFW caveat...(more...)

WSJ Piece on Design Continuum's Gianfranco Zaccai

Once you've got a degree in industrial design and start to circulate in society, you realize ID is the redheaded stepchild of the creative industry. It's the coolest field to us but it doesn't have the same cachet—at least to laypeople—as graphic design, architecture or fashion. So I'm always shocked (if pleased) to see non-rockstar ID'ers being covered in mainstream media. The Wall Street Journal's got a profile up on Design Continuum's Gianfranco Zaccai, revealing that firm's method of using direct experience for research. "As one staffer put it, the firm's philosophy is: 'Go to where the lion is hunting, not the zoo.'" Zaccai himself is an interesting cat: This is a man who quit being Design Continuum's CEO so he could be more directly involved with projects by demoting himself to Chief Design Officer.Okay, maybe it's not a pure demotion but in corporate terms it's a lateral move at best. My point is I admire a guy who reaches the top job, decides he loves design more, and reworks the ladder to suit his purposes.(more...)

Core77 Design Award 2011: "Sticks + Stones," Winner for Design Education Initiatives

Over the next months we will be highlighting award-winning projects and ideas from this year's Core77 Design Awards! For full details on the project, jury commenting and more information about the awards program, go to Core77DesignAwards.comDesigners: Ann McDonald, Ulrich Schwarz, Audra Buck-Coleman, Mark Biddle and Charlotte DriessenCategory: Design Education InitiativesAward: WinnerSticks + StonesSticks + Stones, a collaborative project, gathers graphic design students from diverse geographical regions to explore their similarities and differences, to examine their perceptions and misconceptions of the "other," and to create a greater understanding of their responsibilities as creators of visual messages. The rhetorical strategies in visual communication strongly influence how we think, vote, spend and live. In a global information culture where designers assume the responsibility not only to serve client interests but to be pro-active, ethical citizens we all are the beneficiaries. The principle axiom driving Sticks + Stones is that the more communication designers know about our similarities and differences, whether real or imagined, the better we can shape responsible expressions for increasingly diverse populations. Our first, and most critical constituency is the project's student body. Even amid the complexities of inter-cultural relations and the large scope of the Sticks + Stones agenda, it's vitally important to begin at the level of existence for the individual[..]

Evelio Mattos' Squeeze Box Packaging

Evelio Mattos is the Creative Director of Design Packaging Inc., and the designer is self-admittedly obsessed with paper folding. "If the concept allows me to organically incorporate folded paper into a concept, I will," he writes.Unfortunately, most of the time those concepts work their way out of the final piece due to pricing constraints or material limitations in the mass production environment. But, not this time. Built completely out of folding board, the squeeze box concept developed for Auberge du Soleil Napa Valley is 100% recyclable. The hand-made truffles are well protected by the internal divider which moves with the box and allows for optimal product display. My first thought was, it seems cool from an experiential perspective--you press the "accordion" down and the truffles basically present--but wasteful from a materials perspective due to all of the extra paper folds. But as Mattos points out the stuff is 100% recycleable, so we can get behind it with a clear conscience.via the dieline(more...)

Should we talk about JLo loving herself ‘enough to walk away’ or her newest wax figure? (6 photos)

Well, I guess we'll do both. Jennifer Lopez opens up to Vanity Fair about her failed marriage with Marc Anthony. Their split was just announced July 15th, so I wonder when she actually did this interview. “This was the hardest decision I’ve ever had to face,” Lopez said. “I really wanted this family to work. That was my biggest dream, and I worked hard at it. We both did. Sometimes it doesn’t work—and that’s sad. But I remain an eternal optimist about love. I believe in love…It’s still my biggest dream. It’s still my biggest dream. I am positive—determined to move forward with my life, bring up my babies, and do the best job I can as a mother, entertainer, and person. I now look forward to new challenges. I feel strong.”“I’m a hopeless romantic and passionate person when it comes to love,” Lopez explained. “It’s not that I didn’t love myself before. Sometimes we don’t realize that we are compromising ourselves. To understand that a person is not good for you, or that that person is not treating you in the right way, or that he is not doing the right thing for himself—if I stay, then I am not doing the right thing for me. I love myself enough to walk away from that now.” -source

Anne Hathaway talks about how nervous she was before filming ‘One Day’ (5 photos)

Anne Hathaway gets stylish for Marie Claire while promoting her newest movie 'One Day.' She plays a geeky role during the official meet-up with her soon-to-be friend/love interest for the next 20 years. That role is played by Jim Sturgess. She has played the nerd character before with Princess Diaries back in 2001 and it appears that the Love & Other Drugs star will pull off this hopeless romantic geek character very well:“I’ve never been so nervous about playing anyone as I was to play Emma. There were many reasons to say no to this part. One, because I didn’t think I could pull it off. Two, I was very nervous about the Yorkshire accent.” On the eve of the film’s release she remains ‘terrified’ at the response, especially from One Day fans. Careful not to give too much away, she says of the film’s dramatic ending: “I literally thought I’d misread it. I felt like I’d been punched in the stomach. I was crying and gulping for air. Very few movies are honest about love.”Hmmm will this be a hit or miss? The movie is set to hit theaters August 19th.
