Core77 Design Award 2011: Belvoir, Notable for Graphics/Branding/Identity

Over the next months we will be highlighting award-winning projects and ideas from this year's Core77 Design Awards! For full details on the project, jury commenting and more information about the awards program, go to Core77DesignAwards.comDesigner: Paul Clark and Tim Kliendienst - Alphabet StudioLocation: Sydney, AustraliaCategory: Graphics/Branding/IdentityAward: Professional NotableBelvoirA rebranding of Sydney's Belvoir St Theatre to coincide with the launch, in September 2010, of their 2011 season. Art direction of the full campaign: season book, street posters, postcard series, venue signage, subscriber cards, bookmarks, etc.The biggest problem to solve was to rework a brand that we had built ourselves. The client had a strong commitment to a brand that was unique to them, potent and highly recognisable amongst the Sydney theatre community for the past 10 years. When theatre and film director, Neil Armfield, stepped down from his long and acclaimed position of Artistic Director, Alphabet Studio were invited to pitch against other agencies to continue the contract and to reinvent, refresh and re-articulate the theatre under the realm of a new director. The challenge was to maintain integrity to the product we had worked on for 10 years whilst crafting a look reflective of the direction and vision of the newly appointed Artistic Director. It was exciting in that it really forced us to pull apart existing methodologies and visual process ingrained in the existing and[..]

Kara Witham's SecretSafeBooks

Every time I see a spy movie where a character removes an object hidden inside cut-out book pages, I think "I gotta get a scroll saw and try making one of those." Artist Kara Witham is way ahead of me: She runs SecretSafeBooks out of Chicago, selling a variety of books with hidden storage through an Etsy account. (Check out our post earlier this week about BookBook, a "bookcover" for your MacBook.)Witham, a former security guard at Chicago's Museum of Contemporary Arts, talks about how she managed to ditch the flashlight and start up her own business in this Etsy feature article:I was never comfortable with my art, which was figurative and based upon memories of people in my life. Recently it dawned upon me why I've always enjoyed drawing in a sketchbook so much. A sketchbook can be closed, which is much less terrifying to me. One night I was aimlessly wandering the corners of the Internet when I ran across some images of hollow books. It just clicked with me. A book. A safe. A secret spot. So I researched methods to do it myself, starting out with an X-Acto blade. Later, Santa brought me a scroll saw. Eventually I started making cutouts in books for flasks, which tickles my funny-bone.(more...)

Gwyneth Paltrow gets good advice from Beyonce (5 HQ photos)

Gwyneth Paltrow covers Elle Magazine and talks about the performance advice she received from Beyonce:“Beyonce’s like, ‘OK. The singing is great. But you’re not having any fun.’ She’s like, ‘Remember when we’re at Jay’s concert and Panjabi MC comes on and you do your crazy Indian dance? Do that. Be you!’”She also talked about her solo album: “Beyonce and Jay — they think that I should just go do it by myself. That I should go … in a studio and see what happens. And if it’s good, do it. And if it’s not, don’t. So that’s probably what I’ll do.”

Bike Safety Lighting System, Part 3: Benedikt Steinhoff Finds New Places to Hide LEDs

"Certo" & "Branca" by Benedikt SteinhoffWith the general increase in urban cycling over the past couple years, bicycle safety is a top-of-the-mind issue these days. If our summer gift guide is any indication, lighting is an area of particular concern: two of our six guest curators included bike lights in their selections (though Geekhouse Bikes saw fit to skip lights in favor of beer and chocolate.)Meanwhile, Ethan Frier and Jonathan Ota's "Project Aura" concept has proven to be one of our more popular posts in the past couple months, resurfacing with their recent Core77 Design Awards win. However, as many commenters pointed out (myself included), "Project Aura" simply may not provide enough illumination directly in front and behind of a cyclist. It goes without saying that a pair of Knogs would do the trick, but Berlin University of the Arts (UdK) student Benedikt Steinhoff (above) saw fit to "dedicate his final year thesis to exploring ways of making urban cyclists more visible."(more...)
