Sifteo Cubes

Advertise here with BSAWhen Nintendo got gamers off the couch with the Wii’s motion-sensitive controller, video games entered a new level of interaction and movement. Designing a Visceral Experience: The Morgan 3-Wheeler Seems Less Like a Car, More Like a Low-Flying Sopwith Camel

This is a great example of designing an experience and not a product. A UK-based company called Morgan currently manufactures a three-wheeled car based on a mechanical layout from 1910, but updated with a current-model motorcycle engine (featuring two massive cylinders that each displace a liter) and a Mazda five-speed transmission. The modern-day version is designed to give you the sensation of flying rather than driving, and this car looks—and sounds—like so much freaking fun to pilot:(more...)

"MOBIUS," a Stop-Motion Sculpture by ENESS

Last week, we took a look at the "World's Largest Stop-Motion Animation" http://www.core77.com/blog/videos/worlds_largest_stop_motion_animation_video_20142.asp"> by "UK's Aardman Animations and Sand Sculpture Ice in conjunction with Nokia." For those of you who prefer more abstract work, Melbourne-based art & design practice ENESS has come up with "MÖBIUS," a "collaborative stop-motion sculpture" commissioned by Federation Square. The piece consists of a series of geometric forms that suggest an undulating, spiraling prism when viewed in stop-motion:Twenty-one large triangles animated by Melbourne, throughout Federation Square. MÖBIUS is a sculpture that can be configured into many cyclical patterns and behave as though it is eating itself, whilst sinking into the ground. The result is an optical illusion and a time-lapse of people interacting with thesculpture and moving through Melbourne's landmark location throughout the day.MÖBIUS was animated over two weeks Friday, Saturday & Sundaybetween the 6th and 20th of May 2011.It's quite mesmerizing... though I kind of wish it went on forever, as in its namesake "strip."(more...)

Core77 Design Award 2011: Secret Passageway Switch, Notable for DIY/Hack/Mod

Over the next months we will be highlighting award-winning projects and ideas from this year's Core77 Design Awards! For full details on the project, jury commenting and more information about the awards program, go to Core77DesignAwards.comDesigner: B.Light Design - Ben LightLocation: New York City, New York, USACategory: DIY/Hack/ModAward: NotableSecret Passageway SwitchAn electrical switch, disguised inside of your favorite hard-covered book, used to activate a secret passageway (or turn on a lamp).I have been plagued with the all too common New Yorker dream -- finding a hidden room in my small studio apartment. Every time I wake, I briefly believe that I suddenly have more square footage. Unfortunately, that sensation is fleeting. I tried to create a device that would simulate the experience of discovering this secret room. I created the classic "hidden passageway book entrance" I've seen in many a B movie. The project was fun and the results were very satisfying.Core77: How did you learn that you had been recognized by the jury?I was waiting at gate C16 in the Newark Airport (my flight was delayed for 5 hours) and I watched the live feed on my phone. What's the latest news or development with your project?I am making a small run of the Secret Passageway Switches and attempting to put together a how-to-install video. Should be ready in the next month or so. What is 1 quick anecdote about your project?I have a switch installed in my living room bookcase, it turns on a[..]

Anthias Studio, Accessories by Monica Castiglioni and Natsuko Toyofuku

Browsing the beautifully curated and peculiar design store mc&co in Brooklyn (it's only open to the public on the weekends), I was struck by the bold forms in bronze and silver displayed in the jewelry case. The single and double-fingered rings and chains are beautifully cast out of earthy metals that lend the accessories a nice visual weight. Bronze and silver envelop imprecisely shaped moonstones and other semi-precious stones—this irregular quality gives the collection its personality and a feeling that the beauty of these shapes could only be inspired by nature. Image courtesy of Una PortlandOne of my favorite pieces was an incredible bronze ring that looked more like a cast sculpture on the finger rather than just a ring. The double-fingered moonstone ring also caught my eye—the rounded bulbs and organic shapes reminded me of underwater encounters with sea polyps. The accessories seem both familiar and ancient, possibly prehistoric talismans or modernist architectural pieces.(more...)

Simple Innovation: Ford's Easy Fuel System

As an avid Zipcar user I routinely drive a wide variety of cars, from hybrids to SUVs, all from different manufacturers; it depends on what's available in the lot when I need to go pick something up. All of the manufacturers have designed the same refueling requirements—pop the lid, unscrew the cap, stick the nozzle in—except for Ford, as they've gotten rid of that middle step. For those of you who've never heard of it, a few years ago Ford quietly introduced their Easy Fuel system, which is a minor-sounding but brilliant piece of engineering. Instead of unscrewing a cap, after flipping the fuel door open you simply stick the nozzle through a little spring-loaded gate that automatically seals shut when you're done. It's so simple and intelligent that it makes screwing and unscrewing a cap seem silly, and I wonder why the other manufacturers haven't all followed suit.(more...)

Kate Moss opens up to Vogue about her wedding (7 photos)

With a newlywed status, Kate Moss talked about her summer wedding for the September 2011 Vogue issue. She married The Kills guitarist Jamie Hince and wore John Galliano on her wedding day. Kate opens up about her wedding day jitters:“Let’s put it this way,” she says. “If I didn’t have my friends. . . . I don’t know how people do it. I’ve had big birthday parties, and I’ve thrown parties for other people, but this is a completely different thing. It’s the Met Ball! Because you have to look at every piece of cutlery; the details are intense. And then you wake up thinking about the ballet shoes for the girls; is the satin ribbon right? I’ve gone mental. Jamie thinks I’m mad, asking, ‘Are you gonna be all right? After the wedding, I’m hoping you’ll get back to normal!’”She had sixteen bridesmaids and flower girls and she talks about the mood she was aiming for with the wedding:“I wanted it to be kind of dreamy and 1920s, when everything is soft-focus,” says Kate. “The Great Gatsby. The code name was GG for a while. That light and that kind of fun decadence. It’s rock-’n’-roll Great Gatsby!” There will be Edwardian marquees in her field and a circus tent for the children, with a miniature drum kit and their own DJ and tepees for them to sleep in. A stage is being built by hand, “which I’m going to keep for festivals for the future,” she explains. You can check out the stars who attended the wedding HERE!
