The Final Frontier: Vincent Fournier's Space Project

BAF Room 65#02, Guiana Space Center, French Guiana, 2007Growing up a stonesthrow from Johnson Space Center in Houston, I've always had a special place in my heart for all things related to the space race. French photographer Vincent Fournier has spent the last decade documenting the fact and fiction of space programs from around the world including Guiana, Russia, Kazakhstan, China, Norway and the United States. We love his incredible images capturing the sometimes tenuous relationship between man and machine, built structures and the natural landscape. Check out some of our favorite images and travel with Fournier and VBS.tv (after the jump) to NASA Kennedy Space Center in Florida in preparation for the last shuttle launch.Russian ISS, Star City, Russia, 2007Baikounur City #2, International School of Space, Kazakhstan, 2011Insat 4B Satellite, Guiana Space Center, 2007(more...)

Over the next months we will be highlighting award-winning projects and ideas from this year's Core77 Design Awards! For full details on the project, jury commenting and more information about the awards program, go to Core77DesignAwards.comDesigner: Lucia TurcoLocation: London, United KingdomCategory: Strategy/ResearchAward: Student NotableSequential Cycles'Sequential Cycles' is born from constant collaboration with dyslexic children and their teachers within a leading school for learning difficulties set in London. It is the result of reflections on dyslexic people's problems related to the perception of time (sequential, organisational etc) and was developed on children and teacher's feedback.Dyslexia is the most common type of specific learning difficulty. It is a genetically transmitted condition of the brain, and being not an illness it cannot disappear, but early intervention is advised to build up strategies to face it.In the UK, it mildly affects 10% of school age children and severely affects 4%.Differently from the common understanding of this condition as being only related to problems with reading and writing, dyslexia is a combination of many problems that include difficulties with organisation, language, short time working memory, words storing and retrieving, possible fine and gross motor problems and phonological awareness. In addition, dyslexic people struggle with conventions and abstractions: they have particular difficulties with the perception of time and[..]

Get Ready for Mehndi

Quicker to apply than tattoos but no less intricate, Mehndi is the Indian tradition of applying henna dye to the skin for weddings, festivals and holidays. One such holiday is the upcoming Raksha Bandhan, a sibling-celebrating festival for which Mehndi artists in India, Nepal and in expat communities worldwide will be breaking out the cones they use to apply the henna. There are tons of Mehndi videos on YouTube, like the one below. While it's a bit long at nine minutes, if you scan through it you won't be disappointed at the beautiful complexity of the pattern taking shape. Bit of a shame it will all eventually wash off, but unlike with tattoos, the impermanence is part of the profundity.(more...)

History of the BMW 3.0 CSi

BMW has done a great job producing video content for their YouTube Channel and we recently noticed a great historical look at the BMW 3.0 CSi. With 200 hp at 5500 revolutions per minute, this car introduced a number of features new for the time, including fuel injection, 150Kw and a 220km/h top speed. The 3.0 CSi was a status symbol for consumers during the early '70s. My favorite line from the video:The autobody of the coupe, produced by Karmann in Osnabrück, required the hand of a real gentleman to steer it.Check the full video after the jump!(more...)
