Sneak Peek: Marimekko inspired by New York City

In anticipation of the opening of the new Marimekko Flagship store in New York City, illustrator Aino-Maija Metsola drew inspiration from the everyday lives of New Yorkers to create a bold and playful facade, marking the space. The Finnish company is celebrating their 60th year and their bold prints and fun textiles, 60 years later, still feel fresh and fashion-forward.For her piece, Metsola was inspired by culturally adapting Marimekko prints and colors arriving in the lives of New Yorkers. She drew reference from the Flatiron District and the artwork depicts an atmosphere of everyday life in New York with parks, birds, squirrels, people, magnolias, milk shakes and blossoming cherry trees. Vibrant and cheerful, the purpose of the artwork falls in line with Marimekko's mission to bring happiness and joy to one's every day. Marimekko's goal was to maintain and respect the integrity of the beautiful area while lifting the spirits of those in the neighborhood. The new 4000 sq ft flagship store housed in the Toy Building on 5th Avenue and Broadway, will showcase the entire range of Marimekko products—homewares, tableware, textiles and fashion—while highlighting new collections and print palettes. We're looking forward to seeing all the classic and new color ways for their signature Unikko poppy print! Check out the inspiration video and a sneak peek of the fall collection after the jump and watch the installation as it goes live! The Marimekko flagship store opens in[..]

Real Art Design Group's MARV Makes (Learning About) College Fun Again

Dayton, OH-based design studio Real Art Design Group recently had the brief to give their client Welcome to College, a web startup, a real-life identity. The result is MARV, "an RV that is not only the smartest one around, but also has a personality as big as the RV itself."MARV, an acronym for Mobile Automated Research Vehicle, was designed to be a new and engaging way for students and parents to begin learning about colleges. Real Art created MARV to both draw in users and gather information about the colleges. By using his rear windshield that Real Art converted into an interactive screen, MARV was able to display games, videos and music while asking vital questions about the schools he visited. "We needed MARV to get out and get in front of the schools and bring them an experience like they've never seen before," said Chris Wire, owner of Real Art Design Group. Real Art began to build MARV by gutting and stripping a 1973 GMC RV. The exterior was repainted with bright, retro colors and Welcome to College branding. Next, the more out of the ordinary features were added, including solar panels, confetti cannons, fog machines, light show capabilities, prize dispenser, rear airbags that allow him to dance, and the programming for MARV's conversations.(more...)

"Mods" is a set of wearable sensors that collect and assess health data, providing feedback and alerts to help manage and share health goals and connect with healthcare professionals. With Modwells we were looking to apply some of the principles that constitute a new approach to design, which we're calling "21st Century Design." One of the core principles is autonomy or human liberty, which is the belief that every individual should be able to make their own choices about their own life free from overbearing religious and political authority—we need to aim for a self-aware form of autonomy, informed by a deeper appreciation of the foundations, possibilities and frailties of human nature. 21st Century Design recognizes that changing a person's context is a much more powerful and effective way of shaping behavior than attempting to change one's mind.Core77: What's the latest news or development with your project? The project was an[..]

Source: Wikimedia Commons"Things are becoming more connected every day—connecting faster and in more ways than anybody realizes," says Sheldon Renan. Renan's Law states that "The more things are connected, the better things work... the smarter things are... the safer things are... and the more opportunity you have to succeed." Conversely, emphasizes Renan, "If you limit connectivity, you decrease opportunity. You decrease safety".Renan's "New Laws of Netness" explain how connectivity has begun to change in three ways as it becomes increasingly ubiquitous. Networks are converging towards becoming fabrics and fields. Access will increasingly be through more ubiquitous connectivity fields. Multi-threaded communications fabrics which connect users with both redundant and complimentary services are defining a new degree of connectivity—which Renan characterizes as entangled. Users are virtually "always on" and always connected. presence is continuous. User attention, perceived time and perceived distance are becoming[..]

Senna: A F1 Materials and Safety Exploration

Reporting by Josh WirthThe life of Brazilian racecar driver Ayrton Senna, one of the greatest Formula 1™ drivers of all time, is beautifully portrayed in director Asif Kapadia's recent documentary Senna. The film recounts the making of a three time Formula 1™ world champion and Brazilian national hero, whose brilliant career in racing was cut short when he crashed and died at age 34 the 1994 Grand Prix in San Marino, Italy. The use of home movies and TV footage brings viewers vividly into the racing world of the '80s and early '90s, where Senna was famed for bringing intelligence and sportsmanship, as well as unrivalled technical mastery, to the highly political, competitive and sometimes corrupt sport of racing. The weekend of Senna's final race seemed cursed from the start. First, Senna's protégé Rubens Barrichello, crashed on Friday (he survived). The next day, Senna's Williams-Renault teammate Rolando Ratzenberger crashed and died from head and neck injuries during the qualification laps. Finally, during the Sunday race, Senna lost control of his car when his steering column shattered during a turn. He crashed into the wall, causing shrapnel from the column to strike his helmet with fatal force. Which led us to the question—What are some of the materials employed today to prevent similar fatalities? Two fatal crashes on the same team in one weekend was more than just coincidence. The drivers were driving faulty and unsafe vehicles,[..]

‘Sex and the City’ coming back to TV? (26 photos)

Calling all Carrie, Charlotte, Miranda and Samantha fans - According to the Daily Mail, 'Sex and the City' is coming back to television! Producers met in Hollywood last week to discuss the new show.‘Ultimately Darren Star – the man who created the hit series – will have the overall say, but everyone is agreed a TV show is the direction they want to take the franchise in,’ says my LA mole.‘Sarah Jessica Parker will be producing. She was worried about doing another film after the bad reaction to the SATC2 movie, but a TV show is definitely something she wants to happen.’This is great news for fans of the show, but it also means that any plans for the much-discussed movie prequel will likely be put on hold for now.

Coroflot Genius Gallery - It's Always a Good Time to Shine

We're back to basics following last week's Genius Gallery super-post: this week, we're pleased to announce eight carefully-selected portfolios that represent the many facets of the gallery. Besides a few of the usual suspects—industrial designers Andrea Filogonio, Formboten and Jm Jo—we were also impressed by the likes of young fashion designer Xenia Kuhn and established glass and ceramic artisan Alda Tomás. And while we continue to abide by our high standards for images, renders and photography, each of these portfolios certainly invites closer inspection.Garrett Owen (Dallas, Texas) - Garrett delivers on his promise of superb graphic design without compromising clarity for creativity.Andrea Filogonio (Rome, Italy) - Andrea's work is characterized by a strong sense of surfaces and curves, not to mention a bit of humor.Xenia Kuhn (Berlin, Germany) - Xenia's work in fashion and accessories is alternately playful and conceptual, but consistently well-executed.Davide Perrone (Turin, Italy) - Davide's automobile renders are technical and expressive in equal measure.Karen Preston (Medford, Massachusetts) - Karen dream-like imagery and in her paintings and vector illustrations.Jm Jo (Shanghai, China) - Jm's focus on electronics ranges from the practical to the more fantastical.Alda Tomás (Lisboa, Portugal) - Alda takes the traditional crafts of glass and ceramic design to the next level, both in terms of form and patterns.Formboten [Patrick Decker &[..]
