Nick Gentry's Obsolete Media Portraits

In my early ID days I juggled a corporate design gig with one working for a now-famous avant garde designer, and because I took work home with me for both jobs, I carried 2.5" floppy disks containing the latest CAD revisions back and forth. I always knew which disk was for which gig because the corporation provided the standard blue or beige ones, while the funky designer supplied cool translucent purple or green ones he'd picked up in Japan. Those disks were crucial, absolutely the most important thing I had to carry around; if I forgot one it meant I had to turn around and get back on the subway. But nowadays, of course, I haven't seen or touched one in years. I was excited to recently come across UK-based artist Nick Gentry's "Blink" series of paintings, which uses our long-forgotten floppies as canvases:[Gentry's] portraits use a combination of obsolete media formats, making a comment on waste culture, life cycles and identity. Using old disks as a canvas, these artefacts are combined to create photo-fits and identities that may draw connections to the personal information that is then forever locked down underneath the paint.(more...)

TACN Studio's Simple, Pure Packaging

I find the most effective packing and branding to be simple, straight-forward imagery and typefaces. Similarly, in industrial design and engineering, it is the elegant solution that is often the best option. The work of Vancouver's TACN Studio (a.k.a. Talia Cohen) lives up to that maxim. The one-line, one-circle whales on the Jonah Whale Vodka are so effortless and graceful that they almost disappear into the vodka itself, yet are distinct enough an image to identify the product as a stand-out one. Using various shades of brown to denote the attributes of the coffee blends is, once again, so straight-forward that there really is no other, better option. The branding for the Killer Russian Vodka, however, is much more bold and suggestive with its presence, but does not seem frivolous.(more...)

Core77 Design Award 2011: Jumpseat Auditorium Seating, Notable for Furniture/Lighting

Over the next months we will be highlighting award-winning projects and ideas from this year's Core77 Design Awards! For full details on the project, jury commenting and more information about the awards program, go to Core77DesignAwards.comDesigner: Ziba - Pierre Harper, Dave Knaub, Mehdi Mojtabavi, and Sohrab VossoughiLocation: Portland, Oregon, USACategory: Furniture/LightingAward: Professional NotableJumpseat Auditorium SeatingThe Jumpseat is a super minimal seating system for auditoriums that fits in a fraction of the footprint of typical stadium or theater seating, and uses a unique hinge mechanism to minimize material use.We have an auditorium space in our headquarters that seats around 150. It has a beautifully minimal interior that would make traditional stadium seating look out of place, so for its first months of use, audience members sat directly on the concrete risers. After several months of relative discomfort, we began investigating standard stadium and theater seating, with little success. Existing options clash visually with the clean white walls, unfinished wood and bare concrete of the building interior, and the narrow risers make it difficult for people to pass those already seated. We realized that the environment called for a new kind of seat—something that doesn't just serve the space, but significantly breaks with traditional standards of event seating.Core77: What's the latest news or development with your project? We are currently working with[..]

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation's "Reinventing the Toilet Challenge"

For those of you living in developed nations, no matter how nice or crappy your apartment is, it has a toilet in it. And whether it's manufactured by American Standard or Toto, the basic flushing mechanism is based on 18th-Century technology and uses water. Looking over your computer, your TiVo or all of your hi-tech kitchen appliances, you could say your bathroom is the most low-tech area of your home. Many of those living in developing nations lack even that luxury, a 200-year-old bathroom device that flushes into a sewage or septic system. It's 2011 and there are still roughly 2.6 billion Earthlings who (if you'll excuse the language) shit into trenches or in other unhygienic conditions. It's hardly a glamorous design problem to solve so it gets little press, though the stakes are life and death. (Click here to read about a typical developing nation village where basic sanitation and hygiene are a challenge.) According to this article, "The sanitation revolution, which started in the 18th century with the mass introduction of the flush toilet and sewers, has saved more lives than any other innovation in the history of public health or medical science."Thankfully the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is tackling the problem with their Reinvent the Toilet Challenge:The Water, Sanitation & Hygiene program of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation recently challenged 22 universities to submit proposals for how to invent a waterless, hygienic toilet that is safe and affordable for[..]

Salma Hayek puts her beauty in the spotlight for Allure (6 photos)

The beautiful Salma Hayek interviewed with Allure and talks about getting sexier with age:"As a woman, you should be more at ease with your sexuality when you are in your 40s. You are more self-assured about that part. And that's the way it should be. If you are a girl who cannot walk in heels, it doesn't matter how beautiful you are. If you look like a chicken that's been spiked in the feet, it's not going to be sexy." She also talked about what has changed with her body in the past 10 years, "My boobs; they’re not bad, by the way. I’m not complaining about them."

Standing Desk Shootout: Haworth Planes Height-Adjustable Table

OverviewMin Height: 22"Max Height: 48"Max Load: 250 lbsElectric (also available Incremental Leg, Hand Crank, Torsion Paddle, Standard Actuator)DesignThe Haworth Planes Height-Adjustable Table has a simple, utilitarian design with a customizable desktop. The significant advantage to this height-adjustable table design from the Haworth Design Studio is that the crossbeam has been moved up directly underneath the table top, which improves its accessibility and range of motion with no reduction of stability at full height extension. The trade-off for this stability seems to be weight—even the smaller version of this sturdy desk (23" x 58") is heavy enough to need two people to move it. However, the table has a very wide sit-to-stand range (22" - 48"), and the raised crossbeam and two-leg design with low-profile feet improve accessibility for wheelchairs and users of different sizes and needs to the point where it exceeds ANSI/HFES 100-2007 requirements. Plus it has a motor and gear set that can handle a load up to 250 lbs, so it's going to need some weight behind it.Maximum & minimum table heights, with a 15" laptop and 6 lb chihuahua for scaleThe worktop can be laminate or wood veneer and is available in standard or Green core. Our table has the linen laminate top with the standard 3mm edgeband. The motor and mechanics are hidden within the legs, which keeps the lines cleaner. But there was a lack of anything more than clips for cable management under the table,[..]
