ION's Bi-Directional Camera, Floating Speaker and Mobile DJ System

Earlier this year at the CES show, a company called ION Audio caused a stir with their Wall-Mounted Turntable, above. They have some other unusual product offerings skirting that line between "neat" and SkyMall catalog:ION's dual-lens Twin Video Camera shoots both forwards and backwards simultaneously, letting an interviewer record themself and the subject simultaneously. It's a nifty idea, though it maxes out at a disappointing 640x480 resolution.(more...)

UK Researchers Produce World's First "Printed" Aircraft

I was an ID student in the early '90s when our Production Methods professor told us about this magic machine being developed for the U.S. Navy. Navy ships, he explained, had to carry a huge amount of spare parts. "The goal is for every ship to be self-sustaining," confirmed my buddy Mike Cinquino, a former Petty Officer 3rd Class on the supply ship U.S.S. Detroit. "The idea is that you can take a missile hit and fix the damage with what's on hand." So each ship has storerooms full of thousands of metal nuts, bolts and pieces in different shapes and sizes, which is necessary—and wasteful. But the magic machine my professor talked about was some sort of newfangled 3D printer sitting next to a hopper full of metal powder; a technician would punch in a part number, dump a predetermined amount of powder in, and the machine would spit the part out. No more shelves lined with parts you'll never need.Nowadays, of course, Rapid Prototyping machines are a reality. I never learned if the laser sintering machine my professor described became standard Navy issue, but now researchers at the UK's University of Southampton in conjunction with RP firm 3T RPD have adapted laser sintering technology to another military application: producing aircraft. With its entire structure, including wings, integral control surfaces and access hatches all having been printed on an EOS EOSINT P730 nylon laser sintering machine, which fabricates plastic or metal objects, through a successive layering[..]

Core77 Design Award 2011: Beirut Exhibition Center, Runner-Up for Graphics/Branding/Identity

Over the next months we will be highlighting award-winning projects and ideas from this year's Core77 Design Awards! For full details on the project, jury commenting and more information about the awards program, go to Core77DesignAwards.comDesigner: Mary Choueiter with L.E.FT ArchitectsLocation: Brooklyn, New York, USACategory: Graphics/Branding/IdentityAward: Runner-UpBeirut Exhibition CenterThis project is the visual identity of the Beirut Exhibition Center; a non-profit space that provides a collaborative environment for art museums, galleries, artist collectives and cultural institutions. The corporate identity applications included the primary and secondary bilingual signage in Arabic and Latin through custom typography design. My proposal was simple: to bring together the disparate visual forms of English and Arabic in a cohesive typographic approach, I distorted the rules of both in a fashion similar to how the corrugated reflective mirror building facade distorted the reflections of its surrounding environment. By transforming the original letterforms I was embodying the visual statement of the architecture. More importantly I made the conscious decision of not compromising the letterforms of one language to meet the visual language of the other at the expense of the whole. I was rather altering both equally to reach a whole based on the sum of its parts and its own unique visual language. What is one quick anecdote about your project?Perhaps the most meaningful[..]

"Nine" Desk Lamp by Aldentro

"Nine," a desk lamp by Aldentro—a.k.a. Pieter Desmijter—might be seen as the young Belgian designer's answer to Giorgio Bonaguro's "Tweety" lamp, taking a cue (or is that right angle?) from the glory days of Bauhaus, translating the quintessential modern style into a boxy piece of lighting. The form is minimal to the point of seeming Spartan, folding over itself as though it is hiding the lightbulb, which shines out of its sides nonetheless. Yet "Nine" is far from cold, and its punctuation-like shape adds an aspect of whimsy to the simple lamp. This metal table light gives a soft diffuse light. The idea was to create a table light emphasizing the things that are normally hidden. By using a contrasting socket and textile wire an attractive light was created. It's a simple but tactile light which creates a nice warm atmosphere.(more...)

Steve Denning on Manufacturing and "Why Amazon Can't Make A Kindle In the USA"

Steve Denning is the former Director of Knowledge Management at the World Bank and the author of a slew of business books, most recently The Leader's Guide to Radical Management: Reinventing the Workplace for the 21st Century. Denning currently has an excellent series of articles posted on Forbes that uses "Why Amazon Can't Make A Kindle In the USA" as a jumping-off point for a frank discussion on the current state of global business and manufacturing.Denning uses his expertise to look beyond numbers—which can often lead us to draw the wrong conclusion—to see what's really going on in the manufacturing sector and how seemingly innocuous management decisions can lead to the decline of entire industries. In the first article he touches on how Dell outsourced themselves right out of the business, why a U.S.-made Kindle couldn't happen, the chain reaction of manufacturing decline, what makes Apple different, and seven institutions that would need to step up before we'd see a significant change in the manufacturing landscape.Denning's second article on the topic addresses comments made by readers, but it was his third installment that contained the point I think most relevant to industrial designers: He suggests that Dell outsourced too many critical components, allowing the suppliers to gain enough know-how to make their own complete product, but that Apple may be exempt from this pitfall in that they outsource components but remain masters of how those components go[..]
