Atelier Kurth's "ATV1": From Entertainment Apparatus to Electronic Atavism

Luxembourg-based designer Daniel Kurth recently set out to solve an ultra-specific contemporary problem, itself a symptom of the seemingly endless horizon of media proliferation and the hardware that evolves alongside new modes of consumption: "As Apple launched its redesigned Apple TV, many users are wondering what to do with their first generation model."Instead of subjecting a beautiful, Jony Ive-designed device to a run-of-the-mill e-waste recycling facility, melting the components down to make hard-earned treasures, or re-purposing the circuitry for furniture, Kurth has come up with a more unorthodox solution: to turn the Apple TV into a proto-digital Nixie clock.Kurth has reused every structural element, integrated a nixie controller board, tube holders and replaced the top acrylic plate with a new CNC routed PVC plate. The heavy duty tissue cable doubles as power cord and wall mount string. Similar to the Nixie Concrete Clock, the rearranged tubes allow the user to enjoy the playful interaction between the six tubes. All electronic components in the fully functioning clock are assembled by hand.Full specs and backstory after the jump:(more...)

Lam Keang's Renkasa: A Comprehensive Solution to the Tokyo Umbrella Problem

This is a great example of the kind of thorough design thinking we hope to see more of in future. Lately designer Kam Leang has been getting a lot of blog love for his "Renkasa" umbrella concept, but mostly quick mentions with a couple of beauty shots that fail to convey the depth of Leang's thinking. Let's take a closer look.First conceived of two years ago when he was a student at Tokyo's Tama Art Institute, the "Renkasa" was initially formulated to solve a problem Leang noticed: Umbrellas were frequently ending up as garbage, whether through breakage or negligence. When Leang looked more closely at the problem, he found it was worse for the environment than initially thought: The average umbrella required five different materials broken into more than 75 individual components, all of which were installed in an essentially permanent way. In other words, you couldn't unscrew part of a broken umbrella and use that part to complete another umbrella. So once one component failed, the entire thing was garbage.(more...)

The Museum of Art & Design is pleased to announce the four winners and 13 competition finalists of the 2011 Victor J. Papanek Social Design Awards. The competition is inspired by Papanek's design philosophy:Design, if it is to be ecologically responsible and socially responsive, must be revolutionary and radical in the truest sense. It must dedicate itself to...maximum diversity with minimum inventory...or doing the most with the least. The projects that follow will be featured in forthcoming Exhibitions at the University of Applied Arts Vienna (November 2011) and the Museum of Arts and Design and/or the Austrian Cultural Forum New York (March 2012). Core77 Design Award 2011: Solar Puff, Runner-Up for DIY/Hack/Mod

Over the next months we will be highlighting award-winning projects and ideas from this year's Core77 Design Awards! For full details on the project, jury commenting and more information about the awards program, go to Core77DesignAwards.comDesigner: Studio Unite - Alice Minsoo ChunLocation: New York, New York, USACategory: DIY/Hack/ModAward: Runner-UpSolar PuffThe Solar Puff is an inflatable foldable balloon that is designed based on an origami paper balloon. The Puff takes one puff of air to inflate; the 6 LED lights can illuminate the room at night for 6-8 hours via the bladder of the Puff.I have traveled to Haiti and Nigeria and witnessed many people, thousands of people using kerosene cups and lighting them on fire for use at night because there was no grid in many of these regions. In areas of extreme poverty it is critical to let the children learn school work but they cannot afford the batteries or the fuel for the kerosene, money that could be better spent to feed their children, pay for school, or books. On average, the cost of the fuel is sometimes 30% of a person's income. I have seen children coughing and trying to do homework with these kerosene lamps; or out on a street corner reading from street lights. Every child should have the ability to have a light at night. Foldability and low cost is critical as the ability to package hundreds of the Puff as opposed to a dozen of the solar flash lights.I have been working religiously trying to get the cost down so that[..]

Video Interview with Matthew W. Moore

Media network Protein recently posted a nice video interview with Matt W. Moore. The artist shares a bit about his background, including his eventual arrival at his signature style of illustration, "Vector Funk," which is something like hipster dazzle painted (not a bad thing):I started out as a graffiti artist, painting with spraypaint—became very comfortable working big, in bright color. And then as years went by, I went to college for design, [where I] learned vector illustration. So this, now, is kind of my channeling that knowledge and vocabulary back into handmade art: mural painting. The artist and graphic designer also hints at some future projects, which will take a further dimension of functionality:(more...)

Book Review: Folding Techniques for Designers, by Paul Jackson

Images and review by Daniel StillmanWith 30 years of origami experience, one of my first concerns in reviewing Paul Jackson's newest book Folding Techniques for Designers: From Sheet to Form is the fact that origami is a 3D art. Translating 2D instructions into form is no trivial matter. Like Ikea instructions, origami diagrams are a language into themselves. This book is the distillation of years of teaching this material to design students. To get some practical benefit from it, I would suggest that you spend at least several hours, playing with the forms and techniques introduced here. As part of my review, I've asked my friend and leather jewelry designer Melissa Zook—someone with zero origami experience—to print out some templates, make some folds, and get inspired by the book.Part One: Why it is AwesomeAs soon as I saw this book cover, I was excited. Paul Jackson has been pushing the boundaries of origami for years. As a boy, I geeked out to many of his awesome models—his horse from an equilateral triangle first offended me for its lack of purity (origami was from squares!) but won me over for its elegance. His lidded box taught me how to divide a square into fifths using my eyes and an algorithm. Both were committed to memory at one point in my life. While I loved his representational designs, I was amused and bewildered by his more artistic endeavors that played with form and shadow, but had no legs. More and better representational origami was my[..]

From filming to promoting – Jonah Hill had quite the weight loss (8 photos)

From filming to promoting, there has been quite the transformation with Jonah Hill. He joins Brad Pitt on the new cover issue of New York Magazine. This must mean that the promotional tour for their film 'Moneyball' has officially begun. "The closer we get to fall, the more we root for long shots. And Moneyball, which opens September 23, is one such underdog. Michael Lewis’s 2003 book focused on Billy Beane, the general manager of the then-impoverished Oakland A’s, who used a kind of quantitative analysis known as sabermetrics to create a winning team and, more miraculously, to combat the huge payroll inequities between baseball’s richest and poorest organizations. Beane’s quixotic attempts to reform a hidebound system and turn a ragtag starting lineup of last-chancers into champions forms Moneyball’s heart. But consider that the above summary hinges on words like sabermetrics and payroll inequities, and you begin to understand why—even with the dogged support of Brad Pitt—Moneyball took nearly a decade, three directors, three writers, an almost complete recasting, and a public collapse before it got made. “There were some hard days,” says Pitt. By which he means years." [From New York Magazine]
