Useful, Many-Sized, Modular, and Affordable Small Parts Storage

DIY'ers, modelmakers, woodworkers et cetera all come up with solutions to store differently-sized screws, bolts, and small parts. Some of us use egg crates or Dixie cups, others go with those little plastic crafts boxes filled with a grid of uniformly-sized compartments. But uniformly-sized boxes don't always cut it, like if you need to store tiny machine screws and 3" carriage bolts in the same kit. That's why I love the idea of Adafruit's new Modular Snap Boxes, which let you buy the sizes you need, then snap them together Voltron-style to make your own storage kit. And at US $2.50 for a large box and $5.95 for a ten-pack of tiny-storage boxes, with other prices and sizes in between, it won't break the small-storage bank.(more...)

Kent Blazek's "Nexus Kitset" Lamp

Industrial designer Kent Blazek is pleased to present a new pendant lamp design, the "Nexus Kitset," designed and manufactured in his native New Zealand. The some-assembly-required pendant lamp actually consists of 60 identical blackened okoume plywood pieces, held together by plastic rivets; when the lamp is fully assembled, the pieces form asphere—or technically, a "deltoidal hexecontahedron"—half a meter in diameter, with a basic light fixture at its heart. "This is helped by the flexibility and memory of plywood itself, which when overlapped and connected with the plastic rivets, creates an even pull, creating the spherical shape."(more...)

Core77 Design Award 2011: Transcendenz, Student Runner-Up for Speculative Objects/Concepts

Over the next months we will be highlighting award-winning projects and ideas from this year's Core77 Design Awards! For full details on the project, jury commenting and more information about the awards program, go to Core77DesignAwards.comDesigner: Michael HarbounLocation: Paris, FranceCategory: Speculative Objects/ConceptsAward: Student Runner-UpTranscendenzIn a world in which we are constantly bombarded with injunctions to react or to distract ourselves it gets scarcely possible in our everyday life to dwell upon the essential, the existential, the metaphysical... Transcendenz transforms the reality around us and enables us to live and share immersive, thoughtful experiences.Transcendenz is a personal "design reaction" to the world in which we are living. By observing our modern societies, a certain paradox caught my interest. This paradox concerns the way we behave in time. On one hand we are, in our everyday life, constantly trying to be efficient, organized and quick. As time is money, no time should be lost unnecessarily. We try to save every single minute and to be as productive as possible, which makes us busy people. On the other hand, when we are not working, we suddenly have so much time for ourselves that we don't know what to do with it anymore. Not knowing where to invest our time, most of us will simply consume it throughout different mediums. Facebook, YouTube, TV or videogames are some perfect examples. These information technologies provide us with a time[..]

Fostex Device Provides Much-Needed Audio Input for iPhones

I think it was Stephen Covey who said that as children we're taught to read, we're taught to write, we're taught to speak, but we're never really taught to listen. Any time you catch a snippet of reality TV, a CNN interview, or an overhead conversation on the subway you could be forgiven for thinking conversation is dead and we're all just a bunch of people waiting for our turn to talk.Another place where listening is given short shrift is in product design, specifically with cameras. I see video after video online, whether designer interview, Kickstarter pitch or comedy bit where the audio just sucks. When doing my own interviews using an iPhone or digital camera, I typically carry a separate mic'd iPod just for audio. On days where I don't have this on me—as with a recent JosephJoseph interview I lost—I always get burned because on-camera audio is not up to snuff. So while I know this product looks cheesy, I'm extremely curious to see (and hear) the forthcoming Fostex AR-4i audio interface for iPhone dock connector. It provides you with three microphone inputs and two plug-in mics on swivels, so you can orient them interviewer/subject or point them both at the subject for stereo sound. And while the commercial is not going to win any CLIOs, it does give you the idea (plus you can hear everything being said, crystal-clear):(more...)

Jennifer Aniston, Demi Moore and Alicia Keys team up for a charitable project (16 photos)

Jennifer Aniston, Demi Moore and Alicia Keys come together for breast cancer awareness. The trio has a new charitable project titled Five for Lifetime and they share details in the October issue of Glamour Magazine. The series incorporates unique stories about women who have been impacted by breast cancer. October is breast cancer awareness month so the timing for this story is perfect. Aniston talks about why they chose the Five project:“We were intrigued by the challenge of creating short stories that would defy audiences’ expectation of the subject. We wanted to balance the drama with humor and irreverence because that’s what’s helped our friends who’ve faced this get through their treatment. We wanted stories that were informative without being heavy-handed. Oh, and they needed to be brilliantly written. Other than that, our goals were small. [Laughs.]”

Standing Desk Shootout: Steelcase Airtouch Height-Adjustable Table

The last contender in this month's "Standing Desk Shootout" is Steelcase's AirTouch desk. Unfortunately, we were unable to get our hands (or is that legs?) on a desk here at the Core HQ for a "Living Working With..." feature, so I ended up spending an afternoon at the Steelcase showroom in Midtown Manhattan. They don't call it a WorkLife Center for nothing: Steelcase has taken to championing the more progressive, upright workplace with their Details line of office furnishings, from a range of height-adjustable surfaces ("Height AdjusTable" line, as it were) to the Walkstation, which is more or less exactly what it sounds like.I'll be focusing on the AirTouch desk (pictured above & throughout unless otherwise noted) here, though it's worth mentioning that they also offer a line of motorized desks—the Series, 5 and 7 desks are yet another option, alongside the Geekdesk and Haworth's Planes Height-Adjustable Table. (Steelcase also offers a crank-adjustable table, the Series 3.)OverviewHeight range: 26” – 43” with infinite incrementsAdjustment speed: seated height to standing height in 1.2 secondsErgonomic lift handle activates smooth, effortless height adjustment—speed designated by the userRecommended load capacity (including weight of tabletop): up to 150 lbs. Shortboard Revolution, Surf Design 1967-1984 at Santa Monica's California Heritage Museum

Above: Surfboards from the '70s. Images and reporting by Matt Skenazy"Shortboard Revolution, Surf Design 1967-1984" opened last week at the California Heritage Museum in Santa Monica. The exhibit aims to display "the evolution that created the modern surfboard and modern surfing as we know it" through more than 60 handcrafted boards from nearly two decades of rapidly evolving design and images from some of the great, early surf photographers. Performance and design are linked in many things, but in surfing, more than perhaps in any other sport, the rules of the game change constantly. And nowhere else is progression and design more inextricably linked. Two examples: In 1968, when Nat Young brought a new, round-tail design to Malibu, he was able to do smoother, sweeping turns than his counterparts on squaretail boards. In the early '80s, when Simon Anderson combined three smallish fins with a square-tail, down rail body, the thruster was born. In less than thirty months the thruster accounted for over 90% of surfboard sales. It was the best of all worlds: fast, with maximum acceleration out of turns, but it held fast even during the most dramatic of maneuvers paving the way for surfers to do blow tails, aerials and flips with reckless ease.(more...)

"The 10 Styles of Restaurant Window Taping"

Some NYC restaurant employees, tasked with taping up the windows in preparation for the weekend's hurricane-that-wasn't, maintained a sense of humor, as seen above. Others did taping jobs that revealed their personalities and states of mind as tellingly as a Rohrschach test.
