The Finishes of Benjamin Lai, Part 1

Brooklyn-based Benjamin Lai spends most of his days in multimillion dollar residences, quietly creating. Some days he's high up on a scaffolding under a cathedral ceiling, other days he's on his hands and knees at the base of an Ionic column, still others he's sitting on the client's $20,000 toilet trying to judge how the bathroom will look from that specific vantage point. "I learned that the view from the toilet is one of the most important," he says. "When clients sit there, they have the time to really scrutinize your work."That work consists of using a brush, a combination of liquids and a strange-looking selection of tools to render a surface into existence with a highly specific blend of artistry and science, a kind of alchemy that many attempt but few truly understand. People hire Ben because he's one of the best, and he has pretty good job security because few people can do what he does at the level he does it.Looks like real marble, but it ain't.Even for the super-rich, it turns out, money can't buy everything. A billionaire might have their heart set on having a bathroom made from a type of marble that is extinct. A designer might spec out a type of wood that might be practically impossible to acquire in volume or work into the desired shapes. A client building an addition on his mansion might require the new oak paneling exactly match the original stuff, even though the craftsman who did the original work died more than 100 years ago and the exact stain, tone and[..]

Glif Too Stiff? Orbit Also Allows (i)Phone Users to Do More with Less

Loyal Core readers know we've given Dan and Tom of Studio Neat quite a bit of exposure, ever since they surpassed their funding goal for the Glif - iPhone 4 Tripod & Stand over ten times over.San Francisco designers Jon Norton and Joe Molinari hope to challenge the Glif's wildly-successful-Kickstarted-multipurpose-phone-accessory supremacy with Orbit, which they're billing as "truly the simplest device allowing you to make the most of your cell phone, iPod (and soon the iPad as well!) by giving you the ability to stick your device practically anywhere, and leaving your hands free to be more productive."The design is quite brilliant: a pair of suction cups—one for "anything that's iPhone-ish in size and weight," the other for "practically any surface"—that swivel around a simple ball-and-socket joint. For those pesky porous surfaces, the Orbit includes " clear repositionable polycarbonate discs that can be stuck on to most non glass-like surfaces giving you the capability to mount your device to a painted wall, wood surface, your dashboard or practically anywhere you can think of."The ball-and-socket joint is, of course, a prime example of biomimicry—think hips—which enables rotation across multiple axes.(more...)

Using a new colour-scent language, blind artisans can design the aesthetics and fragrances of the products they create. This craft will provide income and improved social standing for blind people across India. The combination of local and international designers gave our team a unique approach to the project. We combined foreign viewpoints with in-depth local knowledge to inform our design process. Initially our goal was to improve the quality of life of blind people by providing them with a sustainable income. However, we soon realised that improving their position within society was equally important, as social stigma was a major problem. A survey conducted by the Indian Journal of Ophthalmology found that 70% of people agreed with the statement "losing your sight means losing yourself". Addressing this problem became a major focus of our project as improvements in this area would impact the blind community as a whole. We also discovered that 80% percent of[..]

Renovation of Vega-Sicilia Wine Cellars by Salasstudio

Photos by Rafael VargasWhen I think of a European wine cellar, I picture old-world imagery: a lamp-lit cobblestone labyrinth of barrel-lined corridors. Architect Jesús Maneul Gómez Gaite of Fernando Salas' eponymous Barcelona studio clearly has other ideas: he opted for an ultra-modern design language with Salasstudio's latest project for Vega Sicilia, a winery in Northern Spain.Of course, the wine cellar presents an interesting architectural space, one with such a specific function that aesthetic decisions necessarily take a backseat to functional priorities:The project required maximum rigor... Every material used in the process should previously be analyzed to ensure they met the pertinent bacteriological requirements, to achieve an optimum conservation and quality of the wine. The "alteration and refurbishment" project, which included HVAC, lighting, fixtures, as well as accessibility between the ground floor and basement, was completed this spring. The distinguishing feature of the renovation is the undulating solid oak ceiling, which conceals the air conditioning system, "allowing expulsion through the peripheral limits where the ceiling meets the walls, and creating the air return through the gaps between the slats of the central arch." (The ceiling takes the same form on both floors, though central air is only required on the ground floor.)Salasstudio incorporated the existing rows of pillars, which divided each floor into three naves, as ambient[..]
