London Design Week 2011 Preview: Argonaut Collection by Athanasios Babalis & Christina Skouloudi

Athanasios Babalis and Christina Skouloudi, independent industrial designers based in Thessaloniki, Greece, recently collaborated on a collection of six objects that were inspired by the myth of the Argonauts. This year, they decided to work together in order to create objects with clean but intense sculptural forms, with respect to the material's qualities and an unconventional approach in the objects, utility. The objective was also to collaborate with local but highly skilled crafts people and companies and together redefine the limits of design and craft. The six pieces share a distinctly minimal design philosophy, and while there is no uniform aesthetic, all of them reject traditional tropes in favor of a more experimental formal approach. Thus, the underlying theme—again, taking a cue from Jason and his intrepid shipmates—is simply exploration:The Argonauts, went on a long journey to seek the "Golden Fleece." Metaphorically, the modern Argonauts: the team of designers, makers and their work, are on a long journey in search for design excellence. The "Actor" notebook case is a slimmed-down wooden suitcase, designed to house a laptop, its power supply and mouse in the felt-lined interior. It comes in one size that accommodates notebooks up to 17”, with an innovative hinged opening: "The stainless steel door can be secured with a lock or a thumb screw."The "Atalanta" fruit bowl—available in a variety of solid woods and three sizes—is an[..]

Biophilia at One Bryant Park

Richard Cook of Cook+Fox Architects recently took the time to highlight some of their design decisions for the first LEED Platinum certified commercial skyscraper in the world. As the second tallest building in New York City, The Bank of America Tower at One Bryant Park was completed in 2009 and stands out not only against the skyline of the city, but as an example of biophilia, a term coined by the biologist E.O. Wilson to suggest that people subconsciously seek out connections with nature and natural systems. With a focus on health, well-being and the interconnectedness of people and nature, the Bank of America Tower creates 4.7 megawatts of onsite power with almost 3x the efficiency of the grid. Follow along as Cook explains material choices considered when designing the building.(more...)

Core77 Design Award 2011: Coral RASA, Student Runner-Up for Design for Social Impact

Over the next months we will be highlighting award-winning projects and ideas from this year's Core77 Design Awards! For full details on the project, jury commenting and more information about the awards program, go to Core77DesignAwards.comDesigner: Derek BennionLocation: Macomb, Michigan, USACategory: Design for Social ImpactAward: Student Runner-UpCoral RASAThe Coral RASA is a coral reef monitoring device, which features a 360° rotational camera, hydrophone, water tester, and bleaching detection. Reefs provide billions of people with food, tourism revenue, coastal protection, and new medications worth $375 billion/year. They're among the least monitored and protected natural habitats in the world.I wanted to create a device that really would improve upon the current methods of monitoring the coral reefs. Much of it involves diving down to the reefs with charts and comparing colors and data while underwater. The goal was to minimize the amount of dives needed, and to maximize the amount of data retrieved. Making sure this device wasn't too invasive to the life in the corals, was also a challenge. This is why i decided to have be mounted into the floor rather than in or on the corals.Core77: What's the latest news or development with your project?Currently my project is still in the conceptual stage, but I am entering it in a couple more competitions. The ultimate goal is to win some award money so that I can bring my concept to fruition. What is one quick anecdote about[..]

Benjamin Lai, Part 2: The Art & Science Behind Decorative Painting

Given that his field is relatively rare, I thought Ben Lai would be secretive about the decorative painting techniques he employs. (Click here to see what those techniques can yield.) To the contrary, he has no problem with fellow tradesmen looking over his shoulder and even agreed to do some quick video demonstrations for Core77, which we'll have coming up. The video demos took a little cajoling, but that had more to do with Lai's packed work schedule than fear that an onlooker could duplicate what he does. With nearly twenty years of experience in the field, he understands that what he does is not something you can just pick up by seeing it a few times. "Half of it is the chemistry, the mixing of the paints," he says. "Even if you can see or do exactly what my hands are doing with the brushes, if you don't have the chemistry of the glazes down, you simply cannot produce the effects."Before we get to the video demos, we thought some of you would like to know what it's like to work as a decorative painter and hear more about the peculiar blend of art and science that categorizes this field. Lai gave us the story, below.Core77: Industrial design is such a broad field, it's difficult to adequately explain what it is to someone at, say, a cocktail party. I'm guessing your field, decorative painting, has the same problem. Ben Lai: For sure. It encompasses a lot of different things.Let's start small. What are some of the basic types of jobs you find yourself doing? Some of the[..]

Things That Look Like Other Things: "Cindy" Lamp by Giorgio Bonaguro

It's a Friday before a holiday, at least here in the U.S., so Bonaguro Giorgio's "Cindy" lamp makes for perfect weekend fare.Photos by Sergio BiancoGiorgio insists that it was inspired by the "remembering the typical abat-jour," or lampshade, though his toke take is made of Pyrex. It is made by only two parts: the body, with its base, the long neck and the upper part, where the bulb goes; and the removable hat (easy to clean and assemble). The bulb place is on satin glass to help the light diffusion. The elements are combined without using screws; bulb and colored textile wire fit inside the body; the wire comes out from a little "arm" standing from the body, like offering the way to turn the light on.As with the Italian designer's previously-seen "Tweety" lamp, the form is simplified to the point of exaggeration, though the complete form is quite elegant. If you don't get what it looks like, I'm not going to spell it out for you...Of course, it lacks the functional component of its other reference point, since the column has a flat base instead of a reservoir... which isn't to say that the concept doesn't hold water, just that "Cindy" lamp lights up in one way, but not the other.(more...)

Flotspotting: Respect da Spec - Recent Art Direction Highlights

In this edition of Flotspotting Friday, we have a few art direction standouts from the endlessly gifted creatives on Coroflot.Gloria Gonzalez (a.k.a. Glogo Designs) did a great job superimposing a splash of soda onto a flamenco dancer for her entry for a recent Coca-Cola contest.Inês Silveiro's ad for Edições do Gosto, a National Congress of Professional Cooking event, is simple and eye-catching. (I'm also getting an AT&T vibe, though the imagery is strong enough to transcend the telecommunications allusion.)I couldn't help but smile when I came across Jenna Josepher's campaign for "Winosaur - Aged but Not Petrified," a fictitious wine company. Josepher went so far as to mock-up a subway ad with my favorite piece from the campaign, a riff on Whistler's mother:(more...)
