A Slip 'N Slide to End All Slip 'N Slides

Well folks, summer is now officially over. If only I'd discovered this Human Slingshot Slip 'N Slide earlier, shot here by Utah-based filmmaker Devin Graham. This crazy-ass Slip 'N Slide + super bungie cord + ATV + inflatable pool toy contraption, by the way, probably falls into the "Don't try this at home" category: It launched people 120 feet across the water, and the impact was strong enough to knock three of them unconscious. Ah, summer.(more...)

Ride the Talk: (s)Miles City

2.5 Weeks + 1000 Miles + 4 States + Countless Encounters. Follow Cindy Gilbert, program director for the Sustainable Design program at Minneapolis College of Art and Design, as she bikes from Montana to Minneapolis to raise awareness about sustainability challenges and opportunities in the region while raising need-based scholarship money for students. After a chaotic boarding at Missoula's Grey Hound Station, I was finally on my way to Miles City (~480 miles East of Missoula), the place where I would begin to Ride the Talk. My seat buddy, an exhausted mom, had already been on several buses for the past 24 hours when she made her transfer in Missoula with her two young children. I was feeling for her when her child began to kick the back of my seat (incessantly) and she began the battle of the threats, "stop it or no treat when we get there." It could've been a world record for the length of time a two-year old needed to behave oneself. I was hardly an hour into my trip and I wanted to kick the back of my seat. I arrived in Miles City 10 hours later and quickly reconstructed my bike under the fluorescent glow of a gas station canopy. After inflating the tires, getting the lights on and plying my bike with my over-stuffed panniers, I was more than ready to call it a night. I cycled a short distance to the local KOA Kampground ("It's not camping, it's Kamping!" shout their promo posters.) and slept better than I have in weeks. The next morning I decided to check out Miles City[..]

Core77 Design Award 2011: Senseables, Student Winner for Strategy/Research

Over the next months we will be highlighting award-winning projects and ideas from this year's Core77 Design Awards! For full details on the project, jury commenting and more information about the awards program, go to Core77DesignAwards.comDesigner: Hannah DuffyLocation: Chicago, Illinois, USACategory: Strategy/ResearchAward: Student WinnerSenseablesSenseables, an outerwear and footwear solution addressing the needs of children with autism through touch sensitivity, learning tools for independence, and style and peer acceptance. The problem I set out to solve was how to improve the daily life routine for children with autism. What inspired me to choose this topic, was hearing my Aunt Toni talk about my 7-year old cousin, Liam, and his challenges with autism. The next week I was listening to the news and heard how over 1 in 110 children in the United States has autism. I knew this was a sign that I had found my opportunity; I wanted to better the lives of children with autism through design. I knew this topic would be challenging, provide a social and large impact, would be rewarding, and of course would require in-depth primary and secondary research. I was ecstatic to finally work on something that meant something to me and would prove to have a purpose in the world.Core77: How did you learn that you had been recognized by the jury? The morning the Core 77 Design Award Strategy/Research categoryaired I watched it streaming live from Italy. I was so ecstatic tohear them[..]

If You Give Continuum 800 Sheets of Foam Core...

Continuum in conjunction with ai3 recently redesigned Holiday Inn's main lobby into a "social hub." Taking the best elements from cafés, bars and other social atmospheres, the new look really moves away from that Pitbull song and towards something a bit more Apple-meets-your-favorite-chic-local-restaurant. Holiday Inn is expected to outfit their hotels with the new space in 2013.The most interesting part of the story, though, is what happened behind the scenes: Continuum took over a warehouse and used 800 foam core sheets to construct a life-sized prototype of the lobby. This is what prototyping is all about!Image courtesy of Kristyn Hill(more...)

Coroflot Genius Gallery - The Dog Days Are Over

This past week—number 11, for those of you who are keeping count—saw noticeably fewer submissions to the Coroflot Genius Gallery, possibly due to a little hurricane that went by the name of Irene. Still, we're pleased to report that submissions were as strong as ever, particularly in illustration and graphic design, and we're happy to share the best of the best, as well as our latest prize winner. Once again, we have a dazzling mix of cars, packaging, illustration and other designs—check 'em out below.Industrial designer / Preschool Design Director Joe MacCarthy of Oakland, California made the cut for the Genius Gallery last week, but his consummate portfolio warrants a little more attention... which he's getting in the form of this week's book prize! Not only is he an outstanding designer, he's also been on Coroflot since 2001 and his activity has paid off: Joe's garnered some 4500+ likeys, all well-deserved. Congrats, can't wait to see what you come up with!Zofia Bogusz (New York, New York) - Zofia's lush paintings are all the more beautiful for the natural canvases she paints them on.Marc Senger (Boston, Massachusetts) - Marc's vehicle renderings are great, but some of his other concepts are even better.Dirk Dzimirsky (Bocholt, Germany) - Dirk's hyperrealist drawings are (hyper)really unbelievable... we'd love to see these in person.Phil Rose (Sydney, Australia) - Phil's product design portfolio is as straightforward and focused as it gets.Yael Miller[..]

Adele covers Vogue UK, says her weight “has just never been an issue” (16 photos)

The newest cover girl for Vogue UK is the lovely songstress Adele. The Mail had some inside scoop with her Vogue interview:While many young singers are obsessed with staying slim there is one star that makes no apology for her fuller figure. And in a revealing interview singing sensation Adele says she is happy just the way she is and her voluptuous shape has never been an issue.Speaking to Vogue the 23-year-old who also posed for a series of stunning portraits said: ‘I enjoy being me; I always have done. I’ve seen people where it rules their lives, you know, who want to be thinner or have bigger boobs, and how it wears them down. And I just don’t want that in my life.’

1000 Words of Advice: Starting a New Design Program

Back in 2004, I wrote an article called 1000 Words of Advice for Design Students. Flattered that several departments were using the document in their curricula, I followed it up with 1000 Words of Advice for Design Teachers, in 2006 (not used very much in curricula, that one!). For the past year I've been putting together the bones of a new MFA program in Products of Design at the School of Visual Arts in New York City, welcoming its first students in the fall of 2012. (Applications for the inaugural class open this month.) So now it's a year in and a year away, and I thought it might be a nice idea to revisit the 1000-word format, document some of the thoughts and strategies and arguments for the new program, and lay the groundwork for the certain learning ahead. It turns out that 1000 words is woefully insufficient for discussing the most important aspects of the program, but it's a taste, and if you'd like to learn more, please do head over to productsofdesign.sva.edu where you'll find mission statements, Q&As, and more curriculum information than you'll be able to save to Instapaper. In the meantime, here we go, again: Exactly 1000 words below. You Are What You EatThe first decision made for the MFA Products of Design department had nothing to do with philosophy or pedagogy or accreditation; it had to do with food. We've devoted a significant amount of the architecture and planning to what we eat—with generous prep space, two full-size fridges and sinks, rice[..]
