American Design: So Hot Right Now

The latest issue of Fast Co.Design's more traditional parent (magazine, that is) Fast Company hit the newsstands today, and it's a doozie: not only is it printed on paper, but it's a paean to the United States of Design. In all seriousness, though, our friends at the venerable business periodical have put together a nice design annual this time around, providing a timely and relevant window into the topic at hand.As in years past, the annual [design] issue will recognize the 2011 Masters of Design—Jeanne Gang, Founder of Studio Gang Architects; Teddy Cruz, Owner of Estudio Teddy Cruz; Robert Wong, Executive Creative Director at Google Creative Lab; Aza Raskin, Cofounder of Massive Health; and Jake Barton, Founder of Local Projects—in addition to others that are influencing design in America today: Bill Moggridge, Phillip Lim, Mary Barra, and Mauro Porcini..."Design is quickly becoming the corner stone of innovation in America, and a key differentiator bolstering a new wave of entrepreneurship in the U.S.," said Bob Safian, Editor-in-Chief of Fast Company Magazine. "That is why now more than ever, our annual Masters of Design issue resonates with our readers. We have the opportunity to watch the next revolution in design unfold."(more...)

Test Driving the New Scion iQ

The Scion iQ is a cool and zippy car. The thing is tiny. At 10 feet long, I put it in unimaginable parking spots. At around $15K, it will have a tiny price. And the thing has a tiny, tiny turning radius—it can turn on a 13 foot dime (12.9 according to their marketing materials). While I laughed at the idea at first, when I test drove the car...it really became a talking point. Everyone went out and did donuts in tight alleys during the test drive. It delighted all of us, and we talked about it a surprising amount. The big idea: It's like a Smart car, but solid-feeling, zippy and nimble. Several people commented that when they turned around while driving, there was the thought "where is the rest of it?" because it really felt like a full-sized car. For a side-by-side totally unplanned comparison, see below. What did they sacrifice for the size? Obviously, there is no way you can get 4 people and their bags in this. But in contrast with the Smart Car, Scion made a clear choice to make this what they call a 3+1 car. It seats two people and some bags very well. But you can get a third person, behind the passenger side. You lose most of your cargo space (You have to choose one or the other) but you can give a ride to 2 friends. I think it should be called a 2+1 car, but that's just me.How do they do this? With a quick peek under the hood, we see that they moved the differential in front of the trans-axel, making a longer wheelbase and consequently a larger interior, possible.[..]

Core77 Design Award 2011: Fl.Int. Table, Student Notable for Furniture/Lighting

Over the next months we will be highlighting award-winning projects and ideas from this year's Core77 Design Awards! For full details on the project, jury commenting and more information about the awards program, go to Core77DesignAwards.comDesigner: Taylor McKenzie-VealLocation: Providence, Rhode Island, USACategory: Furniture/LightingAward: Student NotableFl.Int. TableThe Fl.int. Table is a table with flexibility and integrity for the urban apartment dweller. The highly portable components assemble without tools, using only thumbscrews. The table utilizes honest materials that transform into a durable coffee table or a sturdy dining table, allowing it to adapt to individual spaces. The social value of my design is primarily ecological. The Fl.int. Table can remain with the owner throughout their life, enduring changes in living space and aesthetic. This eliminates the need for purchasing new products, and enhances the relationship the owner has with the product. Domestic Walnut and American made steel create a classic combination that display their honest use. The product proudly displays its materials.Core77: What's the latest news or development with your project?I am currently in the process of making a few refinements for the final iteration of the table. I have plans to fabricate a small batch of the design in various hardwoods and finishes, and sell them privately. I hope to pursue leads with manufacturers in the future. What is one quick anecdote about your[..]

Ecko Unlimited's Zipper-Based Earbud Headphones

Until I can find a decent set of bluetooth headphones, tangled cords remain the bane of my existence. At least once a week my arm catches on one and unexpectedly yanks it out, creating a violently disturbing inner-ear sensation as the earbud's vacuum seal breaks free.So I was very interested to see ECKOUNLTD's preview of their forthcoming line of headphones (slated for official unveiling at CES 2012) that included the Zip earbuds pictured above. As you can guess, it transmits audio through the zipper itself, eliminating a portion of the cord. I'm not sold on how the "last mile" of cable remains a metal zipper, and I realize it's not entirely practical, but for those who jog in zippered sweatshirts this might be just the thing. The Zips—which include an in-line microphone and pause/play control—are expected to retail for $30.via Engadget(more...)

The Abyss: When Movie Sets Become Reality

I stumbled on these photos of the ginormous sets from James Cameron's 1989 film, The Abyss, which were left derelict in the North Carolina abandoned nuclear power plant where they were filmed. In stark contrast to Cameron's most recent film, Avatar, which is almost entirely CGI, The Abyss was almost entirely filmed in real-scale with real sets.In most cases, the lifetime of movie sets is extremely brief. Entire cities and vehicles are used for a matter of mere months before being torn down to make way for the next movie production. However, as is apparent in this case, the left-behind sets became a sort of surreal architecture wherein a real version of a fake structure becomes real over time. I suppose this would be like building a life-sized model of a skyscraper that wouldn't actually house anyone inside. An absolutely fantastic and candid making-of documentary shows a lot of the set construction that went into the filming of The Abyss:(more...)
