Flowers with high speed sync

Photographing flowers in the peak of the day can be a difficult task if you want to go beyond the prevalent light conditions. It’s then that high-speed sync works for you. I tend to use flash more and more in my outdoor and Nature projects and I don’t understand why people shy away from it. Even the little popup flash can be a good helper if you understand how to work with it.The only problem with the popup flash is that it syncs at a low speed that does not let you control light the way you want. If the sun is not shinning or if you’re working in the shade, it can be used without much thinking, but once you get under direct sun light the exposure values are usually beyond what you want or need to get the best results. These sunflower shots are good examples of the limitations of flash and the advantage of an external flash unit with High Speed sync capability. The lighter shot was taken on a Canon EOS 600 with the new EF 70-300mm L. The exposure was 1/200 at f/10 using the popup flash, to lighten the flower a bit. In this case, because the flower is against the sky, I do not have problems with depth of field, but if I had something behind the flower that was distracting, than I would not be able to close the aperture so much.I did underexpose slightly to darken the sky – and yes, I could edit it in Lightroom, but that was not the idea here and I rather do things in the field if I can – but that would not solve my problem: I wanted the flower to[..]

When time and space swap places

What happens when you want to interchange time and space in a video? Watch and find out, in this video by Last Future. On the Vimeo page, he explains... "I was sitting in a train traveling through The Netherlands recently when for some odd reason I decided I had to take a video of the landscape passing by. I had no real use for it but decided to try and make something of it.I remembered slit-scan photography, a method where a slit is moved across the picture plane essentially taking a temporal image, where different times of the scene are captured on different parts of the film."Combining the technique of slit-scan and a spot of video editing, he came up with a brilliantly unique video...Watch the video: Temporal Video Experiment from lastfuture on Vimeo. And there's a 'making of' explanation, too: Temporal Video Experiment - Making Of from lastfuture on Vimeo.Do you enjoy a smattering of random photography links?
